![]() COLTS COACH JIM CALDWELL TALKS ABOUT LEADERSHIP: DHS Tennis head coach Tim Cleland had the opportunity to meet Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell in the Spring of 2011 at Ball State's Emens Auditorium. Caldwell spoke to an audience of about 1,000 people on the topic of leadership development. He shared his six principles of leadership: competence, humility, authenticity, motivation, passion and service. He said that coaching Peyton Manning is similar to "a teacher working with a highly gifted student." He said Manning is brilliant and devours information quickly, which forces Caldwell and the assistant coaches to constantly pour more information his way. He said the Colts have fewer off-the-field problems than other NFL teams because the owners and top management stress character in making personnel decisions. Caldwell said when teams are looking for leaders, "look for the man who can lead himself -- that's very important." He said the best coaches have "empathy and expertise. You have to have empathy to understand when to cut off practice early or when to push players harder. And you have to have expertise -- you have to know what you're talking about." After the presentation, Coach Caldwell autographed a DHS Tennis hat. |
