Not bad for a couple of boys from Gaston and Dunkirk who started playing tennis in middle school! > Grandma Peggy Brown is now at the Muncie Health Care Rehabilitation Center on North Walnut Street in Room 207. She expects to be there for perhaps a month as she regains her strength. She was extremely excited to learn that DHS had prevailed in the sectional championship over Burris! Love ya all bunches!" > Ex-DHS Tennis player Lindsey Loffer recently announced her engagement. She plans to be married next June to her boyfriend Scott, whom she met at the University of Indianapolis. Congratulations, Lindsey! > DHS sophomore Ben Bryan, 19-5 at No. 1 singles this year, now has 41 career varsity victories. Good advice given at Senior Talks . . .
Continuing a
long DHS Boys' Tennis tradition, the team's
three seniors spoke to the 21 underclassmen on
Wednesday night at the end of practice.
Jared Bullock, John Rauchenstein and Caleb
Austin did a great job sharing words of wisdom.
Among the messages from the seniors: > DHS Tennis stands out because of the emphasis on character development as well as tennis skills. Be more concerned with your character (which is who you really are) than your reputation (which is what other people think about you). If you have strong character, your reputation will be good, too, among people who truly know you. > Your teammates are family. Take care of each other, support each other, and help each other make good choices. Pick your teammates up when they make mistakes. > Enjoy every day because the four years of high school fly by quickly. Before you know it, you will be the one giving the Senior Talk! > Pursue your passions with enthusiasm. When you love doing something, you are on your way to success. > Congratulations on the amazing amount of improvement this team has made from the beginning of the season to the current time. Delta Invitational is a big success . . .
Perfect weather
and strong competition paved the way for a
wonderful Delta Invitational varsity tournament
on Saturday, Sept. 27.
DHS finished third in the strong 8-team field. Fort Wayne Canterbury, ranked 19th, won the championship with a 4-1 victory over Lake Central in the final match. Delta beat 25th-ranked Richmond 3-2 for third place. Richmond has a 15-2 record and is the North Central Conference champion. Prior to Saturday, its powerful singles lineup of Josh Hollingsworth, Jimmy Fetzer and Mike Boyer -- all seniors -- had not been swept in a match all season. But Delta accomplished the sweep behind the strong play of sophomores Ben Bryan and Jordan Chambers and senior Caleb Austin.
It was the first
victory over a state-ranked team this season for
Delta, which finishes the regular season with a
12-7 record. Catching up on the news and notes for DHS Tennis . . .
Here's a
random collection of what's going on in the
world of DHS Tennis:
> Manager Kristen Smith continues to rehabilitate from her recent knee surgery to fix her torn ACL. Kristen is expected back at school this week. With proper rehab, she should be back playing competitively again by the spring season. Good luck, Kristen! > The sectional draw was made Monday during the day. Delta and Alexandria will meet on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. for the semifinals on Courts 1-2-3. Yorktown and Muncie Burris play at the same time on Courts 4-5-6-7. The championship match will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. due to SAT testing that morning. > The junior varsity team finished its regular season with a 10-3 record, which is better than the team's record last season. Winning at least 10 individual matches for the JV this season were sophomore Zach Richardson (15), sophomore Brock Windsor (14), sophomore Josh Hapner (15), freshman Bond St. John (14), sophomore Alex Zimmerman(13), sophomore Tad Dorton (12), and freshman Matt Fisher (11). In addition, junior Aaron Williams, sophomore Youngwoo Han and freshman Ethan Grove have won 10 or more matches combined between varsity and JV results. And considering that three of the top varsity players are sophomores (Ben Bryan, Jordan Chambers and Tate Dishman) the future of DHS Tennis is very bright! > Beginning Monday, the JV players will compete in an intrasquad doubles and singles tournament at practice. Matches will be 8-game pro sets. Let Coach Cleland know if you will NOT be attending. > The annual Senior Talk tradition will be Wednesday during practice. Seniors Caleb Austin, Jared Bullock and John Rauchenstein will speak with all teammates. Attendance is required unless you have permission from Coach Cleland to miss. > DHS Tennis super-fan Peggy Brown, grandmother of Jordan and Josh Chambers, remains in Ball Memorial Hospital. She has had several visitors this past week and has made excellent progress as she continues her courageous struggle to regain her health. Please continue to keep Grandma Brown in your thoughts and prayers! No matter how badly she feels, the mention of "DHS Tennis" always brings a special sparkle to her eyes! Thanks to all who have made a special trip to visit her. Love ya bunches, Grandma! > Catching up with the college crew: * Kristin McKinney began her Ball State tennis career by participating in singles and doubles at the Ball State Invitational this weekend at Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
