Announcements

Check out the latest news and notes about DHS Tennis  . . .

It's the off-season for high school tennis, but there's always a lot going on in the world of DHS Tennis!  Here are some of the latest news and notes:
   > Ashley Philhower (DHS '08) has been named head tennis coach at Muncie Burris High School.
   > Dan Klingenberg (DHS '08) has split time between No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles this season at IUPUI.  He played No. 2 singles at Notre Dame (ranked 30th in the nation) on Sunday night, Jan. 24, and lost a close 6-4, 6-4 decision to Blas Moros, who is ranked 74th in the nation in singles among Division I players.  Moros, from Florida, previously was ranked 19th in the nation among high school tennis recruits and played some ATP Tour Futures events last summer.
   > Zach Ervin (DHS '08), now playing at Butler University, earned a nice victory on Sunday, Jan. 24.  He won 6-3, 6-1 over a Purdue University player from South Africa at No. 6 singles.  Purdue narrowly won the team match, 4-3.  Butler is in the middle of a brutal stretch against Big Ten opponents. They played Ohio State(ranked No. 3 in nation), Wisconsin (ranked No. 32 in nation) and Purdue last week.  Zach also picked up a doubles win over Wisconsin.
  > Hayley Hall (DHS '07) is playing No. 1 singles now for Ball State University.  Now a junior at BSU, Hayley is 2-1 this month with wins over Dayton and Wright State and a loss to an Indiana University player from Russia.
  > Emily Marsh (DHS '09) is going to play college tennis this semester, also.  She is attending Tiffin College in Ohio, where she is on the equestrian team.  But she has decided to join the women's tennis team, also, after being recruited by some of the other players on the team.
  > Interesting stat:  There are only 17 men's and women's NCAA Division I tennis teams in the state of Indiana.  Two of the players who have competed at No. 1 singles at those schools this semester are DHS Tennis alumni!  (Hayley at BSU and Dan at IUPUI).
  > Attention girls' tennis players: Coach Cleland has some uniform samples for girls' tennis in his classroom at school.  Please stop by his room and try them on and give your feedback.
  > Open Gym schedule:  5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25 is our next open gym in the auxiliary gym.
  > Coach Cleland is again organizing the Indiana Tennis Coaches Convention, which will be Feb. 4-5-6 at the Indianapolis Racquet Club.  About 175 or more coaches are expected to attend.  The featured presenter is California's Wayne Bryan, father of the world's top-ranked doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan.  Coach Cleland will present a session on Feb. 5 on "Creative Ideas for Indoor Practice in the School Gym" and on Feb. 6 on "Ten Fun Practice-Ending Team Games"

DHS Tennis earns "Team of the Decade" honors from The Star Press . . .

DHS Tennis earned some major recognition in the Dec. 31, 2009 issue of The (Muncie) Star Press newspaper.

The newspaper selected its 10 high school sports Teams of the Decade as well as 15 high school Athletes of the Decade.

Delta Boys' Tennis and Delta Girls' Tennis were chosen as two of the top 10 Teams of the Decade!

During the decade, the boys won every sectional and regional title, advanced to the 2004 State Finals, and were ranked among the state's Top 10 teams during eight of the 10 seasons.  The team reached the Final Eight four times in the decade. Two doubles teams finished state runner-up, Daniel Jackson and Kelly Robbins in 2001 and Dan Klingenberg and Jeff Price in 2007.

For the decade, the boys' varsity record was 215 wins, 30 losses for an 87.8% winning percentage.

During the decade, the girls won every sectional title and four times reached the Final Eight at state, including 2000 when the team reached the State Final Four.  The girls were ranked among the state's Top 10 teams during eight different seasons and were ranked in the Top 5 during five different seasons (2000, 2001, 2002, 2006 and 2007).  Alison Peckinpaugh won the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award in 2000, and Hayley Hall was Singles State Runner-up in 2006.  Sarah Peckinpaugh and Ashli Smith were State Doubles Runner-up in 2001 and Sarah Peckinpaugh and Kat Yadon were State Doubles Runner-up in 2002.

For the decade, the girls' varsity record was 181 wins, 32 losses for an 85% winning percentage.

Zach Ervin and Hayley Hall were selected as two of the top 15 Athletes of the Decade. This is an amazing honor for Zach and Hayley, each of whom were four-time All-State Singles selections.  By conservative estimate, at least 15,000 boys and girls competed on a high school varsity team in Delaware County in the past decade.  Only one of every 1,000 of those athletes made the All-Decade List -- so a hearty congratulations to Zach and Hayley!

DHS Tennis receives $4,000 grant from Lowe's . . .

DHS Tennis received great news a few days before Christmas.  The DHS Tennis community shelterhouse project has been awarded a $4,000 grant from the national Lowe's Toolbox for Education program.  Official announcement and more details will be coming soon, but the money comes at a great time to help with growing expenses in this building project.

Counting the grant, we now have raised about $17,000.  The shelterhouse (officially named Match Pointe) will seat 100 visitors and will be in use in Spring 2010 although not completed yet.

Please guard against thinking that the project is now fully funded.  Several thousand more dollars needs to be raised in 2010 to complete the project.  However, we are extremely grateful to Lowe's for this generous grant which helps us take a step closer to our goal!

Richardson/Hapner and Cardini/Bergren win club doubles . . .

In the Boys 18-under division, Zach Richardson and Josh Hapner claimed the championship with an unbeaten record.  Brock Windsor and Evan Rodenberger took second place with one loss.

In the Girls 18-under division, the champions were Taylor Cardini and Morgan Bergren.  Finishing second were Abby Alexander and Hailey Humphrey.  Both teams finished with 4-1 records, as did Devyn Wafer and Kati Vasalakis.  In the tiebreaker for fewest games lost in the tourney, Cardini/Bergren had 15, Alexander/Humphrey 16, and Wafer/Vasalakis 17.

Ben Bryan chosen Star Press Athlete of the Year . . .

For the second straight year, DHS junior Ben Bryan has been selected Boys' Tennis Athlete of the Year by the Muncie Star Press sports department.  The award was announced Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Here's information from the story:

Season stats: Went 20-2 in singles play. Advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles state finals.

Season accomplishments: All-State singles second team for the second consecutive season. Only tennis player in East Central Indiana this season to advance to the state finals and make all-state singles or doubles team.

What coach Tim Cleland says: "He's a solid point that you can count on. The other part is he's a really good practice player. He practices hard all the time. Something that also stands out about him is he's a very fair player. He plays with total control. He doesn't ever lose his emotion on the court or anything like that. He has zero problems with anybody ever thinking he makes bad line calls. That's a good package. He's a definite Division I college prospect."

What Ben Bryan says: "Team wise, I thought this year we progressed more than the previous two years. Individually, the biggest thing for me this year is I felt I could win close matches against good opponents. Sophomore year I lost six matches, and (four of them) were 3-setters. I think a lot of it was my maturing."

Bryan, Richardson earn Greencastle tourney titles . . .

DHS junior Ben Bryan played some of the best tennis of his life on Saturday, Nov. 28 as he claimed the 18-under singles championship at the USTA Greencastle Open tournament at DePauw University.  Bryan, who was unseeded, beat the No. 1 seed and No. 2 seed among his four victories.  He defeated players from four Indianapolis area high schools: Pike, Greenwood, Fishers, and Park Tudor.

Ben was especially sharp on Saturday when he defeated Fishers' Chris Essick 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals, then dominated Park Tudor's Derek Reinbold 6-1, 6-0 in the finals.  Reinbold entered the tournament at 14th in the 18-under state rankings.  Ben earlier defeated Greenwood's Kent Austin, the No. 1 seed who is 10th in the state rankings.

Ben also teamed with fellow junior Zach Richardson to win the 18-under doubles championship.  They defeated two more Indy players (Austin Collier and Zach Gharst) in the finals after beating Pike's John Richert and Bloomington South's David Wong in the semifinals.  It was the first sanctioned tournament championship for Richardson.

In other results, junior Brock Windsor and sophomore Matt Hinds each won one round in 16-under singles before losing to seeded players in the second round.  Freshman Evan Rodenberger lost his opening match in 16-under singles but played very well and won two backdraw matches to claim the consolation championship.

Windsor also won the tournament's sportsmanship trophy.  That award is given to only one boy and one girl in the entire tournament, and so it is an excellent honor for Brock.  Tournament organizers cited Brock for his sportsmanship and hustle.

Richardson lost both of his singles matches in 18-under singles, although he was very competitive with Terre Haute South's Cameron Crawford, who plays No. 2 singles for his team.  Zach had two set points in the first set before losing 7-5.

Taylor Cardini dropped both of her matches in 18-under girls singles to excellent opponents.

Another hole-in-one for Coach Cleland's father . . .

Coach Cleland's father, Dave, recently made his second career hole-in-one while golfing near his home in Florida.  His first hole-in-one came 14 years ago in 1995.  Coach Cleland's mother, Jeanne, also has two career holes-in-one on the golf course.

After acing the par-3 17th hole last week, Dave Cleland almost eagled the very next hole when his second shot at the par-4 18th stopped just inches from the cup.

Coach Cleland, meanwhile, only gets aces on the tennis courts!

St. John, Windsor, Wuthrich win YMCA tourney titles . . .

DHS sophomore Bond St. John defeated DHS junior Brock Windsor in the championship match to win the Muncie YMCA 16-under singles championship on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009.  St. John finished with a perfect 7-0 record in the round-robin format.

Windsor finished 5-1 in pool play.  Also finishing with just one loss in pool play were DHS freshman Evan Rodenberger (5-1) and DHS sophomore Matt Fisher (5-1). DMS eighth-grader Bradley Wuthrich lost some close ones early in the tournament but posted a nice victory over Windsor on Sunday.

On the previous weekend on Nov 14-15, DHS junior Brock Windsor won the Muncie YMCA 18-under singles championship.  Windsor finished with a perfect 5-0 record in the round-robin format.  He defeated Zach Richardson, Josh Hapner, Drew Owen, Grant Esposito and Chris Wymer.  Earning second place in the bracket was Zach Richardson with a 4-1 record.  Grant Esposito took third at 3-2.

In the 14-under singles bracket, the winner was DMS eighth-grader Bradley Wuthrich, who was unbeaten against the six other entrants in the round-robin tournament.  Second place went to Conner Neal, a DMS seventh-grader.

Doubles will be the weekend of Dec. 11-13.

Bryan, Dishman, Grove honored on All-State teams . . .

Junior Ben Bryan has been chosen to the All-State Singles second team on Saturday, Oct. 25.  This is his second straight year of being name All-State Singles.  Ben finished 20-2 this season and made the quarterfinals of the State Singles tournament before losing 6-1, 6-3 to Raymond Leonard of Bloomington North.  Leonard reached the finals before losing a three-setter to Dougie Barnard of Brebeuf Jesuit.

Ben now has 62 career wins after his third straight season of 20 or more varsity victories.  He can climb in to the top five on the DHS Career Wins list next season.  He also could become only the second DHS players to be named Singles All-State in three or more years.

Zach Ervin was a four-time All-State Singles selection for DHS Tennis.  Kaus Christopher, Andy Rector, Billy Ruxton and J.D. Greenlee have been two-time All-State Singles selections.

Also honored this weekend were junior Tate Dishman and sophomore Ethan Grove, who were selected All-State Honorable Mention Doubles.  They finished 18-9 at No. 1 doubles.  Their season ended with a loss at semistate to Zionsville's Joe Hammond and Nick Laconi, who went on to win their second straight State Doubles Championship.

This is the 15th straight year in which at least one DHS Tennis player (boy or girl) has been chosen All-State Singles or All-State Doubles.  That streak is 20 consecutive calendar years when Academic All-State is also included.  To put that streak in perspective, consider this: There are approximately 2,200 varsity tennis players each season statewide, and only the top 60 are chosen to the All-State Singles or All-State Doubles teams.

Delta finished 26th in the final state rankings, which also were released on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Craig and Amy have baby boy! . . .

Craig Vickery, former DHS Tennis boys' assistant coach, and his wife, Amy, are the proud parents of a baby boy, Caleb Ryan Vickery.  He arrived at 6:08 p.m. Thursday and weighed in at 6 pounds, 14 ounces.  Caleb has a full head of blonde hair.  Amy and Caleb both are doing well.  Congratulations Vickerys!

Dan Klingenberg playing No. 1 singles for IUPUI . . .

Former DHS Tennis star Dan Klingenberg has risen to No. 1 singles for the IUPUI Jaguars as they begin the 2009-2010 season.  Dan, a sophomore at IUPUI, played No. 2 singles last season. He competed at No. 1 singles this past weekend in the Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne Invitational.  He finished with a 2-1 record in the top spot as he defeated the top players from IP-FW and DePauw University and lost to the top player from the University of Detroit.  Congratulations, Dan!

Dan and another ex-DHS Tennis star, Zach Ervin, will both compete next weekend (Sept. 18-29-20) at the Indiana University Invitational.  Zach is a sophomore at Butler University.  He has been doing well in challenge matches this fall and is likely to play somewhere around No. 4 singles in Butler's lineup.

DHS boys earn state ranking for first time in almost two years . . .

With the team back at full strength, Delta boys' tennis is ranked 27th in the state in the newest poll that was released on Labor Day (9-07-09).  This is the first time the boys have been ranked since October 2007, when the Eagles finished the season ranked No. 7.  Delta was not ranked at all during the 2008 season.

A close 3-2 loss to 15th-ranked Fort Wayne Canterbury is what propelled the Eagles back into this week's rankings.  Delta won No. 1 and No. 2 singles against Canterbury and lost a third-set match tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles as well as a first-set tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles.

This is the 15th time in Coach Cleland's 20 seasons that the boys have been state-ranked.

Delta has already competed against No. 9 Columbus North, No. 11 Zionsville, No. 15 Canterbury, No. 19 Jeffersonville, No. 24 Fort Wayne Carroll, and No. 25 Bloomington South this fall.  Upcoming opponents include No. 13 West Lafayette and No. 17 Lake Central.

Cardinis enjoying Melanie Oudin's rise to stardom . . .

Melanie Oudin, the 17-year-old American who has become a sensation at this year's U.S. Open, has a connection to DHS Tennis.  The rising superstar from Georgia is the girlfriend of another outstanding Georgia tennis player, Austin Smith, who is the nephew of Stephanie Cardini and the cousin of Taylor and Carl Cardini.

Stephanie Cardini has been in attendance at the last couple matches played by Oudin in the U.S. Open.  Oudin has defeated Elena Dementieva, Maria Sharapova and Natalie Petrova to reach the quarterfinals of the Open.  Oudin is guaranteed at least $175,000 for this tournament.

Austin Smith has played on the DHS courts a few times while visiting the Cardinis.

144 players registered for this week's Penguin Classic . . .

The turnout looks strong for the 8th Annual Penguin Classic tennis tournament, which will be Tuesday through Sunday at the Delta courts.  There are 144 players registered.
Youth matches will be mostly during the day, with adult matches mostly in the evenings. Our annual Penguin Party cookout will be Thursday, June 25 evening for all players and fans.  We hope to see a large turnout that night.  Bring a side dish and enjoy the party!

Coach Tim Cleland could use help in the following areas:
     > Tournament desk workers.  This is a great job for current players and/or parents!  Sign up for a shift by seeing Tim on Tuesday at the tournament.
     > Tent crew.  Tim needs at least 6 or 7 people to help put up the tournament tent on Monday evening at 6 p.m. at the courts.  Right now, Jeff Philhower, Jordan Chambers and Tim are the tent crew.  Call Tim if you can help.  The job will not take long, and the tent will provide much needed shade for workers during the tournament.
     > Penguin Party picnic crew.  We will need volunteers to help grill and serve food during the annual Penguin Party on Thursday evening (6 p.m. to 8 p.m.).  This is a great tradition and one of the best nights of the year as we enjoy fellowship, food and great tennis.     Middle School tennis continues to attract large crowds.  Almost 40 boys and girls have signed up, and attendance at each session averages 25 to 30 players.  The next session will be Friday, May 8 from 5:45 to 6:45.

Greenlee chosen all-conference . . .

Ex-DHS Tennis star J.D. Greenlee recently was chosen to the all-Great Lakes Valley Conference team.  He was honored at the conference banquet in St. Louis.  Greenlee is a senior at the University of Indianapolis, where he plays No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.  Here is an article on his all-conference selection.

Ex-DHS Tennis standout Zach Ervin won his match Friday in the Horizon Conference tournament against Valparaiso.  Butler won the match 4-0.  On Saturday, Butler lost 4-0 to Illinois-Chicago as Zach was beaten in doubles.  His singles match did not finish since the team match already was determined.  On Sunday, Zach concludes his freshman season with a third-place match against Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Great turnout for Parent-Child Doubles . . .

A huge total of 20 teams (40 players) turned out Saturday afternoon for the annual Parent-Child Doubles event following the Eagles' intrasquad match.  The winning team was Ed and Hailey Humphrey, who were unbeaten in several sets against the top-level teams.  Congratulations to all who played!  No injuries!

In the intrasquad match, competition for lineup positions remained very close up and down the lineup.  Many players still remain in contention for varsity and top JV positions.

8 for 8 on Saturday for DHS Tennis Alumni . . .

Saturday, April 11 turned out to be a perfect day for DHS Tennis alumni in college tennis. Our ex-players competed in eight matches and collected eight victories!

Butler at Youngstown State in Youngstown, OH
Zach Ervin won at #4 singles and #2 doubles

IUPUI at Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne in Fort Wayne, IN
Dan Klingenberg won at #2 singles and #1 doubles

Eastern Michigan at Ball State in Muncie, IN
Hayley Hall won at #4 singles (did not play doubles)

     U. of Southern Indiana at U. of Indianapolis in Indianapolis, IN
J.D. Greenlee won at #1 singles and #1 doubles
Jeff Price won at #3 doubles (did not play singles)

Here is a more complete update of how these former DHS Tennis players are doing this season in college tennis. Doubles star Jeff Price is off to a good start in his first college season at the University of Indianapolis.  Jeff is playing No. 3 doubles for the Greyhounds and has won 10 of his last 11 doubles matches. UIndy is ranked #7 in the Midwest Region among NCAA Division II tennis teams.  The top eight teams at the end of the season get to advance to the NCAA Regionals, and it is going to be very close for the Greyhounds.

Former DHS singles star Hayley Hall has battled through her back problems this spring to play No. 4 singles for Ball State University.  Hayley, a sophomore, has been one of the team's most consistent winners and has sometimes been the only singles winner for the Cardinals.  She has not been playing doubles this season.  The Cardinals are 5-11 overall and 0-6 in the Mid-American Conference.

UIndy senior J.D. Greenlee hopes to finish his college career by returning to the NCAA Regionals.  He was able to do that his freshman year but the team did not qualify when he was a sophomore or junior.  This year J.D. is playing No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. He recently picked up a very good singles win over the No. 1 player from Rockhurst University, which is ranked No. 5 in the Midwest Region.

Former DHS doubles star Dan Klingenberg played No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles for IUPUI, an NCAA Division 1 team.  On Thursday, April 9, Dan won his singles and doubles matches as the team beat South Dakota State.  He also won his singles and doubles matches on Saturday, April 11 against IP-Fort Wayne.  The Jaguars' season ended Saturday.  Dan now plans to focus on the weight room as he prepares for the next season.

Former DHS singles star Zach Ervin is playing No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles for Butler University, also in NCAA Division 1.  Zach has won six of his last seven singles matches and six of his last seven doubles matches for the Bulldogs.  His doubles partner now is Chris Herron, the 2007 IHSAA State Singles champ.  Butler is 4-1 in Horizon League play entering a big match today (Sunday, April 12) at Cleveland State.

News and Notes for Girls' Tennis Season . . .

On Saturday, April 4, we will have Practice Matches at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the courts.  The schedule will be presented to the girls at Thursday's practice.  These matches originally were scheduled for 11 a.m., but have been moved back due to the funeral of Lorene (Mee Mee) Peckinpaugh, mother of Bill Peckinpaugh and grandmother of four DHS Tennis all-state players: Kate, Ann, Alison and Sarah Peckinpaugh.  Mee Mee passed away Tuesday at age 97. Mee Mee's funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Cambridge City.

Due to Mee Mee Peckinpaugh's death, the weekly meeting of the ALPHA youth group will be at the Crider home on Sunday, April 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. instead of at the Peckinpaughs.  Thanks to Mary Foster for graciously hosting us again this weekend!  All are invited.  Please pass the word to the regular attendees of ALPHA.

The Player Directory and Parent Directory are being compiled and will be distributed soon.  Thanks to Kevin Smith and Lee Wafer for doing this.

PARENT PHOTOS: We would like to post digital images on the website of parents with their DHS Tennis player.  This helps all the families figure out who everyone is.  If you can do this, please email a digital image to Kevin Smith at KSmith@bsu.edu and he will compile a webpage.

The girls' tennis team took advantage of some great weather to open the first week of practice this past week.  We have 32 girls on this year's team.  Many girls are making noticeable improvement already!  Some girls are staying after practice and hitting more balls and/or running on the track.  That's great!  Those who work extra will benefit by improving more rapidly.  The managers also deserve a pat on the back for helping run practices and being encouraging and helpful to the girls.

PARENTS -- Click here to see the Booster Club responsibilities so far.  Continue to volunteer for some of the categories.  Parents who have not yet registered for the Booster Club need to do so as soon as possible. Dues are $25.

UNIFORMS -- Our skirts and tops have been ordered and should arrive around April 8.  The skirts are yellow and the tops are yellow with white piping.  Manager shirts are navy blue short sleeve.  Coaches shirts are yellow long sleeve.  T-shirts are navy. Optional sweatshirt orders will be taken soon.  No one needs to pay for uniforms until you receive an invoice.

YARD SIGNS -- Stephanie Cardini will coordinate orders for DHS Tennis yard signs.  Details have been distributed at practice.

TEAM/INDIVIDUAL PHOTOS -- Photos by Crabtree Photography originally were scheduled for Tuesday, March 31 but will be postponed until we have our uniforms.

TENNIS SHED -- The new tennis storage shed being built by the DHS Construction class is progressing nicely.  It should be in place in the early part of the season.

Big weekend for ex-DHS Tennis stars . . .

Butler University freshman Zach Ervin (DHS 2008) made his biggest contributions of the season so far by winning three of his four matches in Wisconsin over the weekend.  On Saturday, Ervin and his doubles partner won against 31st-ranked University of Wisconsin at No. 3 doubles.  Zach lost his No. 5 singles match 6-3, 6-4.  On Sunday, against strong conference rival Wisconsin-Green Bay, Zach won at No. 5 singles in straight sets and he and his doubles partner also won at No. 3 doubles.

IUPUI freshman Dan Klingenberg (DHS 2008) also played well over the weekend against great competition.  In a match at Northwestern University on Saturday, Dan played No. 2 singles and lost 6-4, 6-4 to a strong player.  The previous day, Dan and doubles partner Bren Vasalakis (Yorktown 2008) played No. 1 doubles and lost 9-8 to Illinois-Chicago's top team.

Ball State sophomore Hayley Hall (DHS 2007) returned to action recently and picked up a victory at No. 4 singles over Wright State.  She tried to play Sunday at 30th-ranked Indiana University but had to retire after falling behind 6-2, 3-0.  Hayley has been trying to recover from back trouble. She still can redshirt this season if she does not play more than 30 percent of the team's matches and does not play against conference opponents.

What's new in DHS Tennis . . .

Some exciting new projects are on the horizon for DHS Tennis.

First, a couple of construction projects are planned for this spring at the courts.  We are replacing the old blue storage shed with a new larger walk-in shed that will store all of our equipment more spaciously.  This shed is being built by the DHS Construction class and paid for by the athletic department.

Second, a 30-foot by 20-foot shelterhouse project is in the planning stages for this spring.  It would be located in the grassy area near Court 5.  Plans call for the shelterhouse to include built-in picnic tables and electricity.  It is being funded in part by donations to DHS Tennis in the memory of Grandma Peggy Brown, who died in October. Additional funds are being raised.  It is hoped that the shelterhouse can be operational this spring in time for at least part of the girls' tennis season.  It will get lots of use during summer camps and tournaments.  More details will be forthcoming.

Third, we hope to plant at least two shade trees in the area of the new shed and shelterhouse as well.

Another new activity this winter and spring will be the formation of a youth group for interested members of the DHS Tennis family.  This youth group is part of the Union Chapel "Alpha" program.  The group will meet at the home of Bill and Betsy Peckinpaugh near Country Village for several weeks, beginning on Sunday, Feb. 8.  The group meets from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evenings. All boys' and girls' tennis team members are invited.  We would love to see you there!

Ben Bryan named Second Team All-State Singles  . . .

Sophomore Ben Bryan has been selected to the Indiana All-State Singles second team.  Selections were made on Saturday, Oct. 25 by a statewide panel of coaches.

Ben completed his season at No. 1 singles with a 21-6 record, the exact same record he compiled at No. 3 singles as a freshman.

Ben's close results with others on the All-State team helped him be chosen for the honor.  He lost 7-6, 7-5 to Jeffersonville's Patrick Elliott (First Team All-State) and lost three 3-set matches to Canterbury's Mitch Stein and Homestead's Conner Andrews (both Second Team All-State) as well as a 6-4, 6-4 decision to West Lafayette's Joey Frank (Second Team All-State).

Bullock, Rauchenstein chosen to Indiana Academic All-State team  . . .

For the first time in the history of DHS Boys' Tennis, two DHS players have made the prestigious Indiana Academic All-State tennis team in the same season.

Seniors Jared Bullock and John Rauchenstein were named Academic All-State when the team was announced Sunday, Oct. 19.

To qualify to be nominated for the team, players must meet the following criteria:
   * Senior
   * Compete on varsity at least 50% of the team's matches
   * Have a minimum GPA of 3.6
   * Have a minimum SAT score of 1650 on the 2400-point scale
   * Have a minimum ACT score of 24

About 200 players from throughout Indiana qualified to be nominated.  From that pool, the nominees' scores are plugged into a computer formula and then are ranked in order.  The top 50 players receive Academic All-State and the rest receive honorable mention.

Bullock, who has a 4.0 GPA, a 2200 SAT and a 34 ACT, finished #6 in the rankings.  Rauchenstein's scores are not as high but he still came up in the Top 50 to qualify for this outstanding honor!

Congratulations to both Jared and John!  By virtue of earning this All-State honor, both players are eligible to get their photo up on the DHS Wall of Fame.

Postseason banquet and awards  . . .

The annual Postseason Awards Banquet for boys' tennis will be Sunday, Nov. 9 at the smaller chapel on the Union Chapel campus in Muncie.  The banquet will be 4 p.m. on that day.  Reservation forms and more details about price, menu and guests speakers have been given to each player and manager at school.  Reservations are due Friday, Nov. 1.

Several DHS Tennis players have been honored in Postseason Awards this week.

Good advice given at Senior Talks  . . .

Continuing a long DHS Boys' Tennis tradition, the team's three seniors spoke to the 21 underclassmen on Wednesday night at the end of practice.  Jared Bullock, John Rauchenstein and Caleb Austin did a great job sharing words of wisdom.

Among the messages from the seniors:
   > DHS Tennis stands out because of the emphasis on character development as well as tennis skills.  Be more concerned with your character (which is who you really are) than your reputation (which is what other people think about you).  If you have strong character, your reputation will be good, too, among people who truly know you.

   > Your teammates are family.  Take care of each other, support each other, and help each other make good choices.  Pick your teammates up when they make mistakes.

   > Enjoy every day because the four years of high school fly by quickly.  Before you know it, you will be the one giving the Senior Talk!

   > Pursue your passions with enthusiasm.  When you love doing something, you are on your way to success.

   > Congratulations on the amazing amount of improvement this team has made from the beginning of the season to the current time.

 Delta Invitational is a big success  . . .

Perfect weather and strong competition paved the way for a wonderful Delta Invitational varsity tournament on Saturday, Sept. 27.

DHS finished third in the strong 8-team field.  Fort Wayne Canterbury, ranked 19th, won the championship with a 4-1 victory over Lake Central in the final match.

Delta beat 25th-ranked Richmond 3-2 for third place.  Richmond has a 15-2 record and is the North Central Conference champion.  Prior to Saturday, its powerful singles lineup of Josh Hollingsworth, Jimmy Fetzer and Mike Boyer -- all seniors -- had not been swept in a match all season.  But Delta accomplished the sweep behind the strong play of sophomores Ben Bryan and Jordan Chambers and senior Caleb Austin.

It was the first victory over a state-ranked team this season for Delta, which finishes the regular season with a 12-7 record.

   > The sectional draw was made Monday during the day.  Delta and Alexandria will meet on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. for the semifinals on Courts 1-2-3.  Yorktown and Muncie Burris play at the same time on Courts 4-5-6-7.

The championship match will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. due to SAT testing that morning.

   > The junior varsity team finished its regular season with a 10-3 record, which is better than the team's record last season.  Winning at least 10 individual matches for the JV this season were sophomore Zach Richardson (15), sophomore Brock Windsor (14), sophomore Josh Hapner (15), freshman Bond St. John (14), sophomore Alex Zimmerman(13), sophomore Tad Dorton (12), and freshman Matt Fisher (11).  In addition, junior Aaron Williams, sophomore Youngwoo Han and freshman Ethan Grove have won 10 or more matches combined between varsity and JV results. And considering that three of the top varsity players are sophomores (Ben Bryan, Jordan Chambers and Tate Dishman) the future of DHS Tennis is very bright!

   > Beginning Monday, the JV players will compete in an intrasquad doubles and singles tournament at practice.  Matches will be 8-game pro sets.  Let Coach Cleland know if you will NOT be attending.

   > The annual Senior Talk tradition will be Wednesday during practice.  Seniors Caleb Austin, Jared Bullock and John Rauchenstein will speak with all teammates.  Attendance is required unless you have permission from Coach Cleland to miss.

Greenlee plays tennis with famous musicians . . .

DHS Tennis graduate J.D. Greenlee got an unusual opportunity last week to play tennis with some famous musicians.  Greenlee is a senior at the University of Indianapolis.  Two bands, Counting Crows and Maroon Five, were in town to play a concert at Verizon Wireless Music Center.

After the tennis session, the musicians gave Greenlee a ticket to the show and a backstage pass.

Ex-DHS Tennis star Andy Rector hangs out with the stars . . .

The photo below shows DHS Tennis standout Andy Rector posing with Andy Roddick at a recent charity event in Austin, Texas.  The third person in the photo is Chris Varga, former teammate of Rector's at Ball State University.  Rector is on the far left, Roddick in the middle, and Varga on the right.

Rector now is working for AT&T business markets group in Atlanta.  Previously, he worked for Boyd Tinsley, a musician with the Dave Matthews Band.  While working for Tinsley -- a huge tennis fan -- Rector had many tennis opportunities.  Among other memories, he traveled to Wimbledon with Tinsley to watch Roddick play, and at the US Open, he sat with Venus Williams at a cookout to celebrate Roddick's birthday.  Rector also attended more than 40 Dave Matthews Band concerts this past summer.

Rector played for DHS Tennis from 1994 to 1997.  He played No. 1 singles and was All-State Singles in 1996 and 1997.  He finished with 75 career victories, which is fourth on the all-time list.

She had triple-bypass surgery, plus four stents and valve repair.  Recovery will take time, but the surgery went well and she is in good spirits.  Although she appreciates phone calls and visits, those calls and visits require a great deal of energy and it is important that she continues to rest and recover.  Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers!

She will be back cheering for DHS Tennis before you know it!

New photos added to slideshow on home page . . .

Take some time to watch the slideshow on the home page.  A few new action photos from the Spring 2008 season have been added.  More will be added in the coming days.  The new photos include action pictures of Devyn Wafer, Taylor Cardini, Morgan Hahn and Katie Loffer.

Eagles battle through tough, cold conditions . . .

Everything fell into place for a great Eagle Round Robin tournament Saturday, except one thing: Mother Nature did not cooperate.  Four state-ranked teams gathered in Muncie, but the morning started with rain and temperatures in the low 40s.  After several delays, the teams found some dry courts at Muncie Central HS and play began, but by that time the temperature had dipped to about 40 and stiff winds made it feel even colder.

Eventually, all that could be played was one team match apiece.  Sixth-ranked Fort Wayne Canterbury beat 15th-ranked Delta 4-1, and 27th-ranked Terre Haute North defeated 21st-ranked West Lafayette 3-1 (the #2 doubles match did not finish).

All teams appreciated the efforts of the DHS Parent Boosters, who provided burgers, hot dogs, brats, fruit, veggies, desserts, and hot chocolate.  Special thanks also to Don Wafer for helping with the transition to the Muncie Central site.

Kristin McKinney remains sidelined with pneumonia.  Kelly Crider won the first set at #1 singles but lost in a third-set tiebreaker to a strong opponent.  Ashley Philhower and Emily Marsh dominated their match at #2 doubles.  Devyn Wafer and Taylor Cardini hung tough in the first set at #1 doubles but lost 7-5, 6-0.  Laura Hapner and Morgan Hahn got better as the matches went on at #2 and #3 singles, but neither could claim a set.

DHS has four matches scheduled in a six-day span next week.  If Mother Nature cooperates, it should be a good week to show improvement.

DHS ranked No. 15 in first poll of spring season . . .

For the 10th consecutive year, DHS girls' tennis is ranked in the State Top 20 rankings.  The Eagles are at No. 15 in the opening poll of the year, which was released Monday night, April 7.  The Eagles are off to a 2-0 start, but the competition will get much more difficult this Saturday.  That's when DHS hosts the Eagle Round Robin, playing No. 6 Fort Wayne Canterbury at 9:00 a.m., No. 27 Terre Haute North at 11:30 a.m., and No. 21 West Lafayette at 2:00 p.m.  All matches are at Delta.  Come out and watch some great tennis this weekend!

  * Freshmen start well: Four of our freshmen (Devyn Wafer, Laura Hapner, Aly Hopkins and Hailey Humphrey) combined to finish with 7 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie.
   * Nice leadership: Good leadership from the seniors and juniors in terms of competing hard, working together, and communicating on the court
   * Thanks managers: Thanks to Dan Klingenberg, Bob Helfst and Jordan Chambers for charting statistics of matches throughout the day
   * Parent / Child Doubles: We had about 10 teams compete in the Parent/Child Doubles.  It looked like a lot of fun!  Unfortunately, court time was limited due to being indoors.
   * Where do we go from here?: With only 7 more scheduled practice days before our opening match against Winchester on April 3, we need to continue to LAY IT ON THE LINE every day in practice.  The major point of emphasis this coming week will be developing more consistency by reducing unforced errors and sustaining longer rallies.

             Hit it in.

Thanks to Criders for hosting party . . .

The Spring Season Kick-Off Party was held Friday, March 14 at the Crider home for all players, managers, and families.  Thanks Dr. Mike and Mary for being gracious hosts again!  Attendance was good, and the food was great!  Ping pong, euchre, and a marathon viewing of The Office provided the entertainment.  Congrats to Grandma Peggy Brown and Kim Hapner for their euchre domination of Coach Cleland and John Hapner. (There WILL be a rematch!)

Hayley Hall owns Ball State's top record . . .

Hayley Hall continued her hot play with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles against Butler University on Wednesday, but the Ball State Cardinals lost 4-3 to Butler in the home match.  For Hayley, it was her 14th win in 20 matches this year, which is the top record on Ball State's team.

Hayley and her partner also won at No. 3 doubles against Butler.

Hayley Hall wins big in Memphis . . .

Hayley Hall and Andy Roddick both played tennis matches in Memphis, Tennessee, on Friday, but only one of them left the court happy.

Hayley gained a 6-0, 6-1 victory over her University of Memphis opponent at No. 5 singles.  Hayley's victory helped Ball State pull out a 4-3 victory over Memphis.

Meanwhile, the top-seeded Roddick lost to Sweden's Robin Soderling 7-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of an ATP Tour indoor event in Memphis on Friday night.

On Saturday, Ball State edged Tennessee Tech 4-3 as Hayley again won her singles match.  She dominated her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

On Saturday, April 12, the field for the Eagle Round-Robin will now include West Lafayette instead of Anderson.  The three teams joining Delta in that event will be Terre Haute North, Fort Wayne Canterbury and West Lafayette.  This will be one of the state's toughest tournament fields that weekend.

On Saturday, April 26, the Delta Invitational field no longer will include West Lafayette.  Its replacement will be Batesville.

Hall and Greenlee play well in college matches Saturday and Sunday

Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24 were good days for ex-DHS Tennis players in the collegiate ranks.

Freshman Hayley Hall, who has been out recently with a back injury, returned to the Ball State lineup at #4 singles and won 6-0, 6-1 in her match against Youngstown State on Saturday.  She did not play in the doubles.  Ball State won the overall match, 6-1.

In Michigan on Saturday, junior J.D. Greenlee picked up two victories against conference opponent Grand Valley State, but the University of Indianapolis lost the team match, 6-3.  Greenlee won 8-3 with partner Jan Statsny at #1 doubles, then won 6-4, 7-5 at #2 singles.  Greenlee beat sophomore Patrick Troy, an all-conference player last year and a former Michigan high school state champion.

On Sunday, Greenlee continued his hot play against Ferris State in Big Rapids, Mich.  Greenlee and Statsny won 8-5 at #1 doubles for UIndy's only point in an 8-1 loss to the nation's 38th ranked NCAA Division II team.  Greenlee and Statsny are ranked 6th in the Midwest Region in Division II tennis.  Greenlee lost his #2 singles match 6-7, 7-6, 3-6 to Ferris State senior Akshay Chellappa, one of the Midwest's top Division II singles players.

J.D. Greenlee does well against Division I competition  . . .

Former DHS Tennis standout J.D. Greenlee put up some good results this past weekend as his University of Indianapolis Greyhounds played two NCAA Division I opponents, Ball State on Saturday and IUPUI on Sunday.  UIndy is NCAA Division II.

J.D. and his doubles partner, Jan Stastny, lost 8-7 in a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles against Ball State.  They then bounced back to beat IUPUI 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.

In singles, J.D. lost 6-1, 6-4 to Jose Perdomo of Ball State and lost 6-2, 7-6 to Gabriel Garcia of IUPUI. Both matches were at No. 2 singles, although both of J.D.'s opponents have played No. 1 singles for their teams for most of the season.

Ball State freshman Hayley Hall dropped her singles and doubles matches against DePaul over the weekend for her first losses of the spring season.  She did not play against Marquette on Sunday.

Ball State senior Stephanie Farrar to help girls' team as intern . . .

Stephanie Farrar, a former Ball State women's tennis player from Arizona, will serve as an intern this season for the DHS Tennis girls' team.  She is a BSU senior studying sport psychology.

Stephanie played 2 and 1/2 seasons on the BSU women's team before a back injury ended her collegiate career.  She played as high as No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles in the Ball State lineup and earlier in her junior tennis career was ranked as high as No. 8 nationally in girls' doubles.

Stephanie hopes to go into coaching or instructing at a tennis club after college.  This will be her first experience coaching in a team setting.  She is eager to assist and will be helping in some conditioning sessions and when outside practice begins March 10.

Ben Bryan advances to quarterfinals of Hennessey tournament in Indy  . . ..
Dan Klingenberg reaches semifinals of doubles at Hennessey . . .

DHS freshman Ben Bryan played excellent tennis this week as he won three rounds in the strong John Hennessey Tennis Open in Indianapolis.  He lost in the quarterfinals to #2 seed Santiago Guerra of Midland, Michigan.

More than 400 tennis players from throughout the Midwest are competing in the Hennessey at five sites in Indianapolis.  In Ben's 14-under singles division, there were 60 players.  Ben beat Austin Collier in the opening round and then beat Alexander Woldmoe in the second round.  He beat Temilolula Adelakun of Illinois in the third round in three sets.

This tournament is one of the bigger "points" tournaments of the season and should help Ben's rankings in Indiana and the Midwest improve.

DHS senior Dan Klingenberg competed in 18-under singles and doubles.  He beat Royce Redmond in the opening round, then lost 7-5, 6-2 to 8th-seeded Skyler Engel of Ohio in the second round.

In 18-under doubles, Klingenberg and partner Taylor Tunis of Whiteland, Ind., reached the semifinals.  They beat Carmel's Harrison Hines and his partner in the opening round, then beat North Central's Jami Clark and Brebeuf's Scott Schmelzer in the quarterfinals.  They lost 7-5, 7-6 in a semifinal match Saturday night to Michael Koval of Green Bay, Wis., and Garrett Nickell of Greenwood.

Muncie's Jon Wegener won his first two rounds in the 18-under singles and then lost to Skyler Engel in the quarterfinals Friday.  Yorktown's Bren Vasalakis lost his opening singles match, then won two matches in the backdraw.  Wegener and Vasalakis were upset in the first round of 18-under doubles.

 Holiday Hacker results . . .

Star Press chooses Zach Ervin for Athlete of the Year for third time  . . .

The Muncie Star Press selected DHS senior Zach Ervin as its  Boys' Tennis Athlete of the Year for the third straight year.  The article was published Tuesday, Dec. 11 and can be accessed here.

Zach is the first Delta male athlete to be a three-time Athlete of the Year in the same sport.  Former DHS Tennis star Hayley Hall is the only four-time winner of the award.

DHS Tennis has won the award every year since its origin in the 1990s.

Zach and Coach Cleland had asked that the Star Press staff instead honor senior doubles State Runners-Up Dan Klingenberg and Jeff Price for their outstanding season, but sports editor Greg Fallon made the final decision.

The article combined the AOY honor along with the official newspaper announcement of Zach's signing with Butler University.

Brittany Teagle chosen team MVP in college  . . .

Former DHS Tennis player Brittany Teagle, now a freshman women's tennis player at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio, has been chosen team MVP.  Teagle finished with a team-best 21-12 combined record in singles and doubles this fall for the Mount.  She typically played #3 or #4 singles and #1 doubles. Congratulations, Brittany!

Here's the link to the team website

Bryce Bow earning honors at Goshen College  . . .

Former DHS Tennis star Bryce Bow, who played No. 1 doubles on our State Finals team in 2004, is doing well at Goshen College, where he is a junior member of the men's basketball team.  The team is off to a 10-1 start this winter and recently beat 5th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan.

Although Bryce's playing time is not as extensive as he would like, he is doing extremely well in other areas.  He is making all A's this semester and will qualify as an Academic All American after this semester.  He also is one of only two students at Goshen to be asked to be on the Spiritual Advisory Council, which is made up of administrators, teachers, campus pastors, and students.  He is doing all this while also serving as a resident assistant in the dorms and playing college basketball.

Congratulations, Bryce!  The DHS Tennis family salutes you and your accomplishments and wishes you continued success.

Klingenberg is runner-up in Greencastle Tournament  . . .

DHS Tennis senior Dan Klingenberg had an excellent tournament during the weekend at the Greencastle Junior Open, which ended Sunday, Dec. 2 at DePauw University's Blackstock Tennis Center.

Klingenberg, competing in the 18-Under Singles division, navigated through a tough field to finish runner-up in the 24-player draw.  He beat Tom Miller of Carmel in the opening round, then eliminated 2nd-seeded Matt Hanauer of Fort Wayne in the second round.  In the quarterfinals, Dan defeated former DHS Tennis standout Josh Chambers, 6-2, 7-5.  In the semifinals, Dan beat Mitchell Stein in three sets. Stein, the No. 1 player for Fort Wayne Canterbury, and Hanauer, the No. 1 player for Fort Wayne Carroll, each were All-State Singles honorable mention selections this past high school season.  Miller was first-team All-State Doubles for Carmel this season.  In the championship match, Dan lost to Jami Clark of Indianapolis North Central.

DHS freshman Ben Bryan finished runner-up in the 16-Under Singles consolation bracket.  He lost a tight three-setter to Zionsville's Conner Dunn in the opening round, then won two backdraw matches (including a victory over Homestead's Bradley White) before losing in a third-set tiebreaker to Tyler Scanlan of Perry Meridian in the finals.

DHS senior Kristin McKinney reached the semis of the 18-Under Singles consolation bracket.  She lost 6-3, 7-5 to Anderson Highland's Mercy Scott in the first round, then finished 2-1 in the backdraw.

DHS senior Kelly Crider dropped a close 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 decision to Center Grove's Becca Porter, an All-State Doubles player.

Josh Chambers picked up victories over Dalton Theineman of Floyd Central and Jonathan Kersey of Greenwood before losing to Klingenberg.

Ashley Philhower, Caleb Austin, Carl Cardini, Bobby Helfst and Jordan Chambers also competed in the tournament.  Our teams had to drop out of doubles due to a long backup in the schedule for singles matches.

Zach officially chooses Butler University . . .

Senior Zach Ervin has made it official: He's going to play collegiate tennis at Butler University in Indianapolis.  Zach accepted Butler's offer of a tennis scholarship after considering offers from both Butler and Ball State.

Butler competes at the NCAA Division I level and plays in the Horizon League.  Butler has won six consecutive Horizon League championships, a title which earns the Bulldogs a trip to the NCAA Championships.  Jason Suscha, who has coached Butler for 11 years, has developed an excellent schedule, which was attractive to Zach.  The Bulldogs play matches this year against Ohio State, Purdue, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Northwestern plus compete in tournaments at Ball State, Marquette and Purdue.

Among the current players at Butler is freshman Chris Herron, the 2006 Indiana state champion.  Zach is projected to play at about #5 in the singles lineup and also hopes to be in the doubles lineup.  However, the competition for singles and doubles positions is very tough, and Zach knows it will require a great deal of work for him to be in the lineup his freshman year.

Butler also has an outstanding academic reputation.  Former DHS Tennis star player Kristin Crider, the class valedictorian last year, is a freshman at Butler studying pre-med.  Zach has not settled on a major yet.

Zach's scholarship is worth more than $100,000 over the four years of college.

Congratulations, Zach!  Everyone in the DHS Tennis family wishes you the best of luck at Butler!

As many as three other current DHS Tennis players are in the process of making decisions to play collegiate tennis.

Senior Ashley Philhower has accepted a scholarship to play tennis at Indiana University-Southeast in New Albany.  This is an NAIA school coached by Bill Ryall.

Senior Dan Klingenberg is in the early stages of seeking college tennis opportunities.  He hopes to play at the NCAA Division I level.

Senior Bobby Helfst is considering tennis opportunities at several smaller colleges.

Mr. Helfst to direct strength development program for all interested players . . .

This is a great opportunity for boys' and girls' players!  Please pass the word to your friends who might not see this! Mr. Bob Helfst, athletic training expert and physical therapist, has volunteered to run a strength and agility development program for all interested DHS boys and girls players.  The goal is to turn our players into better athletes -- stronger, quicker, more explosive.  The FREE program will be in the auxiliary gym at 7:30 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday evenings (beginning this Wednesday, Nov. 14).  Just show up this coming Monday if you are interested.  Dan Klingenberg, Jordan Chambers, Jared Bullock, and Ben Bryan attended the first session and did well.  Now we need more players -- boys and girls -- to join the fun! Make the commitment this offseason to become a better athlete!

NEXT SESSION: Monday, Dec. 10 -- 7:30 p.m. in the auxiliary gym

Next weekend, Nov. 16-18, will be boys and girls 16-under and 12-under singles and all doubles.

Zach Ervin receives state's Wilbur Schumacher Award for 2007 . . .

Zach Ervin received a major award, the Wilbur Schumacher Junior Sportsmanship Memorial Award, on Saturday, Nov. 10.  This award was presented by the Central Indiana Tennis Association at its annual meeting at Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis.

The criteria for the award are superb playing ability, exemplary sportsmanship, and outstanding mental attitude.  The recipient each year is considered to be "the male player of the year" for CITA.

Zach's accomplishments included three years on the CITA Junior Davis Cup team, a current Midwest ranking of #34, four years of All-State Singles, career victory leader at Delta, a 3.90 grade-point average, Academic All-State Honorable Mention, secretary of the National Honor Society, two years as NCAA Ambassador speaking to elementary students about character values, and an attendee at IHSAA and Hoosier Heritage Conference leadership and sportsmanship conferences.

Coach Tim Cleland presented the award to Zach.  Others attending were Pat Ervin and husband, David; Mark Ervin and wife, Molly; as well as ex-DHS standouts J.D. Greenlee and Drew DeHaven.

Zach becomes the first Delaware County tennis player ever to win this statewide award, which has been presented every year since 1972.
Congratulations!

Post-Season Banquet delivers many strong messages  . . .

The 2007 Boys' Tennis Post-Season Banquet was again a wonderful success at the First Presbyterian Church near the BSU campus during the afternoon of Saturday, Nov. 3.

One highlight was the innovative season video shown on the big screen.  Dan Klingenberg's video incorporated dozens of interviews with team members into the hundreds of photos and was based around the theme of, "Who Are We? We're Delta Tennis!"  He took orders for 32 videos afterward; anyone else who wants one should contact Dan to place an order.  The cost is just $10 which covers the 65-minute video and a 4-minute tribute video to Coach Cleland.

Keynote speaker Mr. Doug Wagner reminded the players to live life with passion and to have faith during times of adversity.  He spoke briefly of his own battle against cancer, saying the cancer was "his biggest blessing" because it changed his outlook on life and gave him the opportunity to raise money to help others who are fighting the disease.  He praised the sense of "community" in the DHS Tennis program.

Five seniors also spoke.  Bobby Helfst, Dan Klingenberg, Carl Cardini, Alex Wagner and Zach Ervin delivered thoughtful and inspiring talks in which they discussed their own experiences with Delta Tennis and some of the life lessons they had learned.  It is impossible to do their talks justice by trying to recap them all here ... but suffice it to say that they made their coaches and parents proud with their heartfelt comments.

Craig Vickery presented JV awards and Tim Cleland presented varsity awards.  Tim's mother, Mrs. Jeanne Cleland, was able to attend the banquet for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed herself.  She spoke for a few minutes at the start of the banquet and her remarks were well-received, also.  Jared Bullock delivered the invocation before the meal, which was catered by Johnny Carino's.

Coach Cleland finished the program with a few minutes on the topic of, "Where Do We Go From Here?"

DHS Tennis Family enjoys TWO parties  . . .

About 60 members of the DHS Tennis Family enjoyed a hog roast and hayride at the Rauchenstein home on Saturday, Oct. 27.  Dr. Jim and June Rauchenstein and family were wonderful as hosts, providing a sizzling bonfire as well as food, a hayride and games.  Mr. Jon Orlosky conducted his 99th career hog roast, and his second for DHS Tennis. The barbeque pork and potatoes were excellent.

From 8:00 to 11:00 p.m., the party continued at the Philhower home in Country Village. Desserts were served and ping pong and Wii games attracted plenty of participation.  About 15-20 players had a fun time at the Philhower party.

Thanks to the Rauchensteins and Philhowers for organizing the parties!

State Doubles Finals  . . .

DAN KLINGENBERG & JEFF PRICE     2007 State Doubles Runner-Up!

Congratulations to seniors Dan Klingenberg and Jeff Price, who finished State Runner-Up in doubles on Saturday afternoon at Park Tudor HS in Indianapolis.  Dan and Jeff set a DHS Tennis single-season record with 29 victories this year.  Their only loss was 6-1, 7-5 to Center Grove's Zane Smith and Matt Smith in the championship match.  When the doubles championship match began, the two teams were a combined 55-0.  The Center Grove team dominated the first set as Dan and Jeff struggled to find their rhythm, but we bounced back strong in the second set and fell just a couple of points short of forcing a third set.  The second set was full of exciting action and amazing shots from all players

Earlier Saturday, Dan and Jeff defeated Jasper's Pete Wilson and Tanner Niehaus, 6-4, 6-1.

In the IHSAA State Singles championship match, Fort Wayne South Side's Derek Carpenter defeated Lawrence Central's Dalton Albertin in a three-set match.  On Saturday, Sept. 1, Delta's Zach Ervin defeated both Carpenter and Albertin on the same day at the Homestead Invitational.

Betsy Peckinpaugh reaches national championship match . . .

Longtime DHS Tennis fan and supporter Betsy Peckinpaugh competed on a 3.5 Senior Women's team in the USTA National Championships this weekend in Tucson, Arizona.  Betsy and her YMCA teammates won all of their matches leading up to Sunday morning's national championship match.  In the final match, the Muncie YMCA team lost 3-0 to a team from New England.  The Muncie women won their first set on all three courts, but lost all of the matches in third-set tiebreakers. Congratulations, Betsy!

All-conference and all-district teams chosen . . .

All-conference and all-district teams
for this fall have been announced, and as expected, DHS Tennis is well-represented.  For the Hoosier Heritage Conference team, Zach Ervin and Joseph Taylor were chosen in singles and Dan Klingenberg/Jeff Price and Alex Wagner/Carl Cardini were chosen in doubles.  Ben Bryan was selected honorable mention.  For the All-District 4 team, Zach was picked to the #1 position in singles and Joseph was picked to the #15 position in singles. In All-District Doubles, Dan/Jeff were selected to the #2 spot and Alex/Carl were picked to the #7 spot.  The top 16 singles players and top 8 doubles teams are chosen All-District.  Congratulations to our representatives!

Academic All-State team announced . . .

Academic All-State selections
were announced Saturday, Oct. 13.  DHS Tennis had four nominees: Alex Wagner, Dan Klingenberg, Zach Ervin and Carl Cardini.  All four received honorable mention.  The top 50 nominees are chosen Academic All-State; Zach finished 55th on the list.  Alex and Dan also were very close to the top 50.  A fifth senior, Bobby Helfst, qualified academically but fell a couple matches short of competing in at least half of the team's varsity matches, which is an additional requirement to be nominated for Academic All-State.  Other minimum requirements are a 3.6 GPA on a 4.0 scale, an SAT of 1100 or higher, and an ACT of 24 or higher.

Schedule released for Spring 2008 girls' tennis season . . .

DHS Girls' Tennis schedule
has been announced for Spring 2008.  Check out the schedule here.

So close . . . again . . .

Delta now has reached the IHSAA Final Eight match a total of 13 times in boys' and girls' tennis. This has happened eight times in boys and five times in girls.  Here's how those 13 matches have ended up:
    One 4-1 victory (boys 2004)
    One 3-2 victory (girls 2000)
    Six 2-3 losses (3 boys, 3 girls)
    Four 1-4 losses (3 boys, 1 girls)
    One 0-5 loss (boys)

In the morning round of semi-state, Delta boys and girls have a combined all-time record of 13 wins and 8 losses.

Although disappointing to come so agonizingly close again, there is no shame in losing in the IHSAA Final Eight in a one-class system with more than 300 schools competing in tennis.  Coach Cleland and Coach Vickery congratulate everyone and look forward to the future.  We are proud of the efforts of all of the players this season.

Season ends at Final Eight . . .

For the eighth time in the last 13 seasons, the DHS boys reached the Final Eight of the IHSAA tournament. On a brutally hot and humid day in Fort Wayne, 6th-ranked DHS eliminated 10th-ranked Westview 4-1 in Saturday's morning round of semistate, then lost 4-1 to 4th-ranked Zionsville in the Final Eight match. The Zionsville match was closer than the final score indicated.

On a bright note, seniors Dan Klingenberg and Jeff Price won twice Saturday and qualified for the IHSAA State Doubles finals.
They improved to 27-0 at No. 1 doubles.  Their highlight victory Saturday was a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision over Zionsville's Marshall Brown and Peter Gunderman, the third-place state finishers in 2006.

On a sad note, senior Zach Ervin suffered his first loss at No. 1 singles and finished 25-1 for the season.  He won his morning match over Westview and won the first set of his afternoon match against Zionsville, but then suffered crippling cramps due to the extreme heat and humidity.  After being unable to continue in the third set, he was forced to retire for the first time in his career.  He spent Saturday night in Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne being treated for severe dehydration and is expected to be released Sunday.

DHS finished the season with 23 wins, 2 losses.  This is the team's ninth straight 20-win season and the 12th in the past 13 years.  The year-by-year records:

YEAR RECORD POST-SEASON RANKING
2007 23-2 Final Eight Top 10 (finished #7)

2005 22-2 Sweet 16 Top 10

Hayley Hall finishes second in Ball State debut . . .

Former DHS Tennis star Hayley Hall made her collegiate debut this weekend for the Ball State University women's tennis team and won three of four singles matches and two of three doubles matches.  Competing in the C Singles Flight at the Ball State Invitational, she beat players from the University of Dayton, Northern Illinois University, and Butler University before losing in the finals to a player from Miami (Ohio) University.  The tournament was played at Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.  Next weekend, she will be at the University of Cincinnati Invitational.

Coach Cleland goes 500 above .500 . . .

With Thursday's opening round sectional victory, a 5-0 shutout of Yorktown, Coach Cleland's all-time win-loss record moved to 574 wins, 74 losses -- a margin of exactly 500 more wins than losses during 31 seasons of coaching boys and girls tennis.

Sampras ball won by Jordan Chambers . . .

DHS freshman Jordan Chambers won the Pete Sampras autographed tennis ball in a raffle drawing Monday night.  Tickets were sold Saturday at all three sites of the Delta Invitational.  We raised $181 from the raffle, which should help cover costs for the picnic that fed all 10 teams at Saturday's invitational.  Thanks to DHS Tennis Booster Jeff Philhower for his donation of the Sampras ball.

Seniors talk to underclassmen. . .

The annual tradition of Senior Talks was held on Tuesday, Sept. 25.  Each of the nine seniors addressed the rest of the team in the second half of practice.  Although the seniors took a variety of approaches, the common themes were:
   * Work hard in the off-season to improve           * Keep your GPA high your first two years of school
   * Have fun ... because tennis season and high school both go by extremely fast
   * Don't take DHS Tennis for granted                     * Appreciate all that everyone does for you
   * Figure out who your true friends are                 * Avoid smoking, drinking and drugs
   * Wins and losses aren't as important as making sure that you are doing things to get better
   * Play off-season sanctioned USTA tournaments    * Help your teammates on and off the court
   * Come to practice every day ready to work hard   * Set goals in tennis and in life

DHS Tennis shows support for injured Carroll player . . .

DHS Tennis players and parents responded generously in a show of support for FW Carroll varsity tennis player Henry Galliher, who was injured critically in a car accident four months ago and faces a long recovery.  Prior to Saturday's match, DHS Tennis presented a card and more than $500 in donations to the FW Carroll team to be given to the Galliher family for medical expenses.  The money was raised in less than 24 hours.  Thanks to everyone who was able to contribute to help this family in a time of tremendous need!

Jared Bullock, Ben Bryan and Tate Dishman honored in "Building Foundations" program  . . .

Junior Jared Bullock and freshmen Ben Bryan and Tate Dishman are the latest DHS Tennis players to earn a T-shirt in new athletic director Mr. Stan Daugherty's "Building Foundations" program, which puts an emphasis on character development for Delta HS athletes.  The six character traits that are emphasized in the program are Respect, Responsibility, Perseverance, Commitment, Integrity and Self-Control.

As part of the program, Delta athletes can earn a Delta Athletics "Building Foundations" T-shirt for displaying some of the character traits on or off the playing fields.  Head coaches in each sport are responsible for identifying deserving athletes on their teams.

Bullock, who has played for only two years, finished his junior season with a winning record in singles.  His groundstrokes have improved as he has concentrated on his preparation and court coverage, which enables him to more consistently hit two-handed topspin backhands.  For this, he earns a shirt for Perseverance.  He also was honored for his Integrity, a tribute to the way he lives his life.

Despite his young age, Bryan has shown excellent poise and composure on court day-after-day in practice and in matches.  A varsity player all season, he has a 17-4 record, mostly at No. 3 singles.  He has competed against 5 seniors, 7 juniors, 11 sophomores, and 1 freshman this year.  For the way he handles pressure and adversity, Bryan earns a T-shirt for Self-Control.

Dishman, one of 12 freshmen on the team, earns a T-shirt for the trait of Responsibility.  He is often the first volunteer to pick up tennis balls at the end of practice.  He helps the coaches take in the equipment, and often has an encouraging word for his teammates.  He accepts the blame for poor performances and is modest when he has good matches.  He has excellent leadership potential for the future.

DHS Tennis players who have been honored this season in the "Building Foundations" program:

WEEK ONE -- Senior Dan Klingenberg (Commitment)
WEEK ONE -- Senior Carl Cardini (Perseverance)

Former DHS Tennis players earn Academic Awards at Ball State . . .

Two former DHS Tennis players (both 2005 graduates) are in the news for their academic accomplishments at Ball State University, where they are juniors.  Todd Darroca has won a prestigious Regional Emmy Award for his work in the telecommunications program at BSU.  Jared Burt recently won first place in an architectural competition in Columbus, Indiana and earned a trip to an architecture convention in Boston.  The competition was judged by architects from throughout the nation. Congratulations, guys!

Delta vs. Homestead -- an incredible tennis rivalry  . . .

Delta and Homestead have met in boys' tennis 19 times, and all 19 times, both schools have been ranked among the state's Top 20 teams.  For the past decade, this has been one of Indiana's greatest tennis rivalries.  An amazing 14 of the 19 career matches have been settled by scores of 3-2, including this Saturday's 3-2 victory for 8th-ranked Delta over 10th-ranked Homestead.

   First nine matchups -- 1995 through 2000 -- Homestead 9 wins, Delta 0 wins

   Last 10 matchups -- 2001 through current -- Delta 5 wins, Homestead 5 wins

Homestead, a school of 2,052 students in a wealthy area of Fort Wayne, has been a tennis powerhouse since the 1970s.  The Spartans have made 17 trips to the State Final Four.  Delta, by contrast, has 940 students, emerged as a tennis power in the mid- to late-1990s, and has made one trip to the Final Four.

Last season, the Eagles' 3-2 victory over 7th-ranked Homestead signified the highest-ranked Homestead team that DHS has ever beaten. That match will always be remembered for Zac Bow and Joseph Taylor at #2 doubles, where they withstood 11 match points against them and somehow prevailed, 7-6, 6-7, 11-9 in the final match on the courts!  All of the positions were very close, making for one of the most enjoyable matches in the long history of the rivalry.

Despite the 3-2 score, this year's match was not nearly as dramatic, as Zach Ervin won 6-0, 6-0 at #1 singles and DHS lost only 8 games total in the two doubles matches.

The rivalry has had some incredible moments over the years.  One of the most memorable matches came on Oct. 11, 1997, in the semistate finals on a 75-degree perfect fall afternoon.  Fifth-ranked Homestead won 3-2 over 9th-ranked Delta with the decisive match being a 6-4, 6-4 victory for Homestead senior Rick Phillipp over Delta senior Andy Rector in a 2-hour, 30-minute match.  Rick Phillipp went on to win the IHSAA State Singles championship two weeks later, becoming Homestead's first (and only) State Singles or State Doubles champion.

Another tremendous match came on Oct. 7, 2000, in the semistate morning round on a bitterly cold 40-degree day.  Homestead, ranked #1 in the state, survived a scare from 9th-ranked Delta and won 3-2.  Kelly Robbins won 7-6, 7-6 at #2 singles for Delta, and seniors David Bratton and Eric Freeman won 6-4, 7-5 at #2 doubles, somehow reversing a 1-6, 2-6 loss from earlier in the season.  However, Homestead won at #1 doubles, a position Delta had won in the regular-season match.

The first breakthrough victory for DHS in the rivalry came on Sept. 1, 2001 -- 10 days before the tragedy at the World Trade Center.  The 6th-ranked Eagles dominated the 18th-ranked Spartans at the bottom part of the lineup as Matt McKinney won at #3 singles, Kelly Robbins/Daniel Jackson won at #1 doubles, and Blain Keller/Patrick Bryan won at #2 doubles -- all by a combined score of 36-7 in games!  The final match score was 3-2, but DHS had finally gotten over a hump that had seen Homestead win the first nine meetings between the schools.  Since that time, the schools have gone 5-5 in their meetings.

Another in the series of incredible matches came on Sept. 7, 2002, when 7th-ranked Delta beat 12th-ranked Homestead 3-2 on a brutally hot and humid 85 degree day.  Matt McKinney won 6-4, 6-4 at #3 singles, then was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital with dehydration.  He missed the post-victory dinner and instead settled for an IV drip!

In the semistate championship match later that season on Oct. 12, 2002, the 12th-ranked Spartans upset the undefeated and 4th-ranked Eagles 3-2.  The match started outdoors but was moved indoors after rain delays and ended up taking more than four hours to complete.  Matt McKinney won 6-1, 6-1 at #3 singles, and Alan Robinson/Patrick Bryan won 6-3, 6-2 at #1 doubles, but Delta suffered a setback at #2 doubles when a key player was suspended by the school earlier in the week.  A sophomore by the name of J.D. Greenlee subbed into the #2 doubles spot and teamed with fellow sophomore Paul McKinney, but the two youngsters hadn't played doubles together much and couldn't quite get the job done, losing 5-7, 6-3, 2-6 in the final match on the court.  DHS had won the #2 doubles spot easily during the regular season and in fact was unbeaten for the season at #2 doubles prior to the suspension.

On Sept. 4, 2004, Delta pulled off something it had never done before by sweeping Homestead in singles for a 3-2 win on an 85 degree day. Freshman Zach Ervin and seniors J.D. Greenlee and Paul McKinney all won singles in straight sets over Homestead's young crew of Greg Dillon, Cameron Huffman and Danny Reecer.  The Eagles went on to reach the State Finals for the first time later that season but did not meet Homestead in the semistate.

What is in store next for this amazing rivalry?  Who knows, but you can bet it will be close, it will be exciting, and it will be memorable!

Brittany Teagle off to a good start in college tennis . . .

DHS Tennis 2007 graduate Brittany Teagle is starting strong in college tennis as a freshman at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio.  According to head coach Brian Beebe, Brittany is likely to play #2 doubles and either #3 or #4 singles when the team opens its fall season next Wednesday in Dayton, Ohio, vs. Sinclair Community College. The coach praised Brittany's work ethic and her "great doubles game."  Good luck, Brittany!

Hoosier Heritage Conference winning streak now at 148 matches . . .

During the fall 2007 boys' season, the Eagles increased their incredible streak to 148 consecutive Hoosier Heritage Conference dual-match victories for DHS Tennis.  The streak dates back a decade to the Fall of 1997.  The boys have won 78 HHC matches in a row since a 3-2 loss to 9th-ranked Rushville in the Fall of 1997.  The girls also have won 77 in a row (although only 70 can be counted in the overall DHS Tennis streak because some came prior to the boys' loss in 1997).  The other members of the HHC are Yorktown, Pendleton, Rushville, Mount Vernon, Greenfield, New Palestine and Shelbyville. Congratulations to all of the players over the last decade who have kept that streak alive!

The last time the DHS Tennis team lost a conference match, here was what was happening in the world:
   * Princess Diana had just died in a car crash.
   * Bill Clinton was president.
   * Gas prices were $1.50 per gallon.
   * The World Trade Center's Twin Towers were still four years away from disaster.

How well do you know your teammates ? . . .

The winner of the teammate trivia quiz following Monday's practice is freshman Alex Zimmerman.  Alex correctly answered 19 of the 21 questions about his teammates.  Senior Jeff Price finished second with 15 correct answers, followed by Alex Wagner and Ben Bryan, each with 14 correct answers.  Dan Klingenberg, Carl Cardini, Zach Ervin, Joseph Taylor, Morgan Motsenbocker, Bobby Helfst, Brock Windsor, Aaron Williams and Brock Haggard all got at least 10 questions right.

Jeffersonville Invitational recap  . . .

A large contingent of 72 DHS players, managers, parents and fans spent the weekend in Jeffersonville for the annual invitational.  Besides the varsity and JV tennis, the group also enjoyed dinner at Buckhead's on the Ohio River and played cards and swam in the Holiday Inn.  The weekend was a great bonding experience for the new players and families.

The varsity finished in second place, narrowly losing to 6th-ranked Zionsville by a score of 37 to 33. Finishing with 29 points was 13th-ranked Columbus North, and placing fourth at 27 points was 17th-ranked Bloomington South.

Senior Zach Ervin again won the #1 singles flight for the third straight year.  He defeated Columbus North standout Austin Smith 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match. Seniors Dan Klingenberg and Jeff Price repeated as champions in the #1 doubles flight with no sets closer than 6-2. They beat Bloomington South's Sean O'Connell and Kevin Zhang in the final match.

Seniors Alex Wagner, Carl Cardini and Bobby Helfst combined for third place in the #2 doubles flight.  Freshman Ben Bryan took fourth place at #3 singles.  Senior Joseph Taylor placed fifth at #2 singles.

Although this was the first time the varsity did not win the Jeffersonville Invitational, the team still had a good showing against a very strong field.

The following chart shows our all-time varsity results in the Jeffersonville tourney:

2007 2nd place (33 points) 11-4 record in all matches
2006 1st place (36 points) 12-3 record
2005 1st place (41 points -- tourney record) 13-2 record
2004 1st place (35 points) 12-3 record
2003 1st place (38 points) 13-2 record
2002 1st place (36 points) 12-3 record
2001 1st place (38 points) 12-3 record

TOTAL   85 WINS, 20 LOSSES

In JV competition, the Eagles finished third behind Zionsville and Peru.  Caleb Austin won two of three matches at #1 singles and finished third.  Jared Bullock won two or three at #2 singles and placed runner-up in his flight.  At #1 doubles, Jordan Green and Jordan Chambers won two of three matches and finished third.  At #2 doubles, Aaron Williams and John Rauchenstein won two of three and finished fourth.

For our newer players, victories were hard to come by.  In all, DHS won 11 matches and lost 14 matches in the JV competition.

Theme announced for 2007 boys' tennis season . . .

The theme for the 2007 DHS Tennis boys' season will be "As One" with three interlocked rings.  The rings symbolize unity and togetherness as we pursue our dreams of challenging for state rings as a team, in singles, and in doubles.

It is important that we remember to "play as one" -- everyone trying to help everyone else get better every day.  This is a team with one focus, one agenda, and a one-day-at-a-time attitude.

With nine seniors and 12 freshmen and a combined total of just six juniors and sophomores, it will take special efforts from everyone to build unity.  As each player strives to improve his technique, tactics and toughness, we will build our team piece by piece until we play "As One."

Annual match vs. Springfield, Missouri goes well. . .

Youth players from Springfield, Missouri, and from DHS and East Central Indiana competed for more than 7 hours in the annual match between the two programs.  Tennis pro Doug Elly brought 27 players from his summer program in Springfield.  The boys and girls ranged in age from elementary school to high school.  In the end, Springfield won 29 matches and DHS/ECI won 23 matches. Many matches went to tiebreakers as the competition was tight in most match-ups.

Springfield coaches and parents say that the DHS visit is the highlight of their trip each year.  The cookout organized by Peggy Brown and Susie Chambers was a big success again.  Thanks to all who helped.  Thanks to the Hamilton Township Volunteer Fire Dept. for use of the grills.  Thanks to all of our grillers and all who contributed and served food.  Thanks to assistant coaches David Ellis and Don Wafer.

Girls Banquet goes very well . . .

The Post-Season Tennis Banquet and Awards Program for the 2007 Girls Tennis season was a tremendous success Monday evening at the First Presbyterian Church near the Ball State campus.  Steve Behrman, veteran tennis pro at the Muncie YMCA, delivered the keynote address. Steve's speech was entitled, "Delta Tennis as I 'C' It," and he used a series of C's to make his points about Chemistry, Commitment, Championships and other topics.  He ended with a Challenge to DHS Tennis players to add a State Championship to the long list of other achievements

Seniors
Hayley Hall and Kristin Crider each were excellent in their comments to the 90 people in attendance at the banquet.  Head coach Tim Cleland recognized the past season's accomplishments and based his remarks on the SPF 34 theme of Spirit, Passion and Focus.

Assistant coaches Stephen Hopkins and Kelsey Atkins were recognized and helped distribute awards to players and managers.

The team video produced by Dan Klingenberg was simply outstanding.  Copies of the DVD are available for $10 by contacting the Klingenbergs at 358-4162.  About 20 video were ordered after the banquet and more orders can be placed at this time.  An additional 400 photos are included with the DVD.

Special thank you to banquet chairmen Mary Foster and Cindy Hall for their efforts to make the banquet run smoothly.  Assisting were Terri Hopkins, Aly Hopkins, Todd Austin, Sue Austin, Caleb Austin, Lauren Austin and Holly Dishman
.  It takes much planning and hard work to pull off a banquet successfully, and once again we accomplished it together!  Thank you!

Eagles fall 3-2 to Homestead in semi-state . . .

DHS girls turned in an outstanding performance in doubles but came up short overall in a 3-2 loss to 3rd-ranked Homestead in the opening round of Saturday's Fort Wayne Semi-State.  The match was played indoors at the Wildwood Racquet Club due to rain.  Homestead (20-1) went on to edged 9th-ranked Zionsville 3-2 in the championship round to advance to state for the second straight year. Delta finished 17-4 for the season, with all four losses to Top 10 ranked teams (3-2 to Cathedral, Center Grove and Homestead and 4-1 to FW Canterbury).

In the semi-state, Kristin Crider and Kristin McKinney dominated at #1 doubles, winning 6-1, 6-1.  Kelly Crider and Katie Alexander were equally impressive at #2 doubles, winning 6-1, 6-2.  This was the most dominant any team has been against Homestead doubles all season.

Homestead was in control at all three singles positions. The #1 singles position matched two players who both have been All-State Singles selections and past Singles State Finalists.  Homestead senior Amy Recht played a great match and gained a 6-1, 6-3 victory over DHS senior Hayley Hall.  At #2 and #3 singles, Homestead won easily over Brittany Teagle and Elaine Shafer.

In the afternoon finals, Homestead beat Zionsville at #1 singles, #2 singles and #2 doubles.

Eagles win 16th straight sectional and 4th straight regional . . .

DHS collected its 16th consecutive girls' tennis sectional championship with a 4-1 victory over Muncie Burris on Saturday morning.  DHS has won the sectional every year since 1992.

The Eagles then beat Anderson Highland 3-2 and Bellmont 3-2 to win their fourth consecutive regional championship -- the first time any school has won four straight girls' tennis regionals in this area.

Individual Singles Finals . . .

Junior Zach Ervin defeated Nick Volz of Evansville Central 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the IHSAA State Singles finals on Friday afternoon at Park Tudor HS courts.  A group of about 50 fans -- players, managers, parents, relatives and friends -- supported Zach in the stands!

The victory was Zach's 28th of the season, tying him for the DHS Tennis single-season victory record with Alan Robinson (2002 #1 doubles player).

Zach, playing on a painful right ankle injury, lost 6-3, 6-1 to Greenwood senior Chris Herron on Saturday morning in a singles semifinal match.  Herron went on to defeat Floyd Central's Joseph Boesing 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match.

Zach lost 6-4, 7-6 (5) to Fort Wayne South's Derek Carpenter in the third-place match.

Zach showed a lot of heart as he played through significant pain and tried his best from start to finish.  He didn't make a big deal out of the injury, and he didn't use it as an excuse.

Zach is the third DHS Tennis player to compete in the State Singles Finals. Kaus Christopher finished third in the State Singles in both 1990 and 1991. Senior Hayley Hall has competed in the State Singles Final for DHS Girls' Tennis in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Hayley finished State Runner-Up this past spring.

What else do those three great players have in common?  They are all children of school teachers and school principals (Mrs. Christopher, Mr. Christopher, Mrs. Hall, Mr. Hall, Mrs. Ervin).

27 straight victories over Yorktown . . . and 14 straight sectional titles

For the 27th consecutive time, the DHS Tennis boys have beaten Delaware County rival Yorktown, this time by a 5-0 shutout score in the sectional semifinals on Friday.  It was the second shutout of the Tigers this season. Zach Ervin, Josh Chambers and Rafael Garcia swept singles matches, and Dan Klingenberg/Jeff Price and Joseph Taylor/Zac Bow were doubles winners.  The Eagles did not lose any sets in the varsity match.

DHS then topped Alexandria 4-1 under the lights Friday night to wrap up its 14th consecutive sectional championship.  The Eagles clinched the title quickly with easy victories by Ervin at #1 singles and Price/Klingenberg and Bow/Alex Wagner in doubles.  Later, Chambers added a win at #2 singles.

Now, Delta will be chasing its 12th straight regional championship.  The regional will be played Tuesday and Wednesday at Delta.  First opponent will be Bellmont.  The other match Tuesday will be Muncie Central vs. Anderson.

Coach Cleland is statewide radio/Internet guest . . .

Coach Tim Cleland was the invited guest Tuesday night for the Hoosier Authority Prep Sports Weekly show, which is a statewide high school sports show that is broadcast on ESPN Radio and on the Internet at www.hoosierauthority.com  He was interviewed for 5-10 minutes and answered questions about the upcoming high school tennis tournament, the role of high school tennis in the bigger picture of tennis, the role of this website in marketing DHS Tennis, and various other tennis topics.  To listen to the show, go to www.hoosierauthority.com, then click on Prep Sports Weekly at the top, then look for the archived show from Tuesday, Sept. 26.  Tim's portion of the show comes about 30 minutes into the segments.

Great tennis in the Delta Invitational  . . .

For the first time in the 12-year history of the Delta Invitational, the Eagles did not win the championship. An excellent Fort Wayne Canterbury team improved to 17-0 with a 3-2 victory in the final round, which was played indoors in the Muncie YMCA.  Delta had taken a 2-1 team lead with strong straight-set wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles.  Zach Ervin beat two-time singles state finalist Hunter Schouweiler of Canterbury 6-2, 6-4, and Dan Klingenberg/Jeff Price topped Jim Dusman/Grant Schouweiler 6-2, 6-2.  But Canterbury, ranked 12th, won at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles in third-set tiebreakers to pull out the team victory. Overall, the match featured great tennis by players from both teams.

Earlier in the day, Delta gained an excellent 4-1 victory over 18th-ranked Brownsburg.  The Eagles swept singles behind the play of Zach Ervin, Josh Chambers and Joseph Taylor by a combined score of 36-9 in games.  Dan Klingenberg/Jeff Price pulled out a three-set win at No. 1 doubles, handing Brownsburg only its second loss of the season at that position.

The victory over Brownsburg is the 10th time this season that Delta has beaten a team ranked in the Top 25 state rankings.

In the first match Saturday, the Eagles beat Mount Vernon 5-0 to wrap up a perfect Hoosier Heritage Conference season.  Delta won every HHC match by a 5-0 shutout this season. Delta's all-time record against HHC opponents is 76 wins, 1 defeat.  The lone defeat came nine years ago in 1997 when Rushville, then ranked #9 in the state, edged Delta 3-2 in a match that finished with some tight, three-set matches being played under the lights at the DHS courts.

Next up for DHS will be the Delta Sectional, which will begin Thursday at 4:30 at the Delta courts.  The sectional draw will be Monday.  Other teams in the sectional are Yorktown, Burris and Alexandria.  There will be one round Thursday, then the finals at 11:00 a.m. Saturday.

Rain cancels JV Invitational  . . .

Unfortunately, the season-ending JV Invitational at Fort Wayne Carroll could not be played Saturday due to the rain.  All players should continue to come to practice next week.  We will play our annual JV singles and doubles tournaments at practice during the next few days.

Thank you to our advertisers . . .

Nineteen local businesses and organizations have stepped up to support DHS Tennis by advertising in the 2006 DHS Boys Tennis Invitational program guide.  Thank you to coordinator Donna Helfst!  The program generated more than $1,300 in advertising revenue.  This money will pay for this weekend's picnic for the 10 teams and will also help defray costs for the season-ending DHS Tennis Banquet.  Please support our advertisers:

Senior Day goes successfully . . .

Senior Day was a success Wednesday as seniors Josh Chambers, Zac Bow, Kory Mace, Rafael Garcia and Andres Garcia all won their matches against Pendleton Heights.  A large crowd watched as the Eagles shut out Pendleton Heights, 5-0.  A big thank you to Sue Brooke for coordinating the Senior Day activities.

Three more victories for DHS . . .

Delta Tennis claimed three more victories Saturday at the Kokomo Invitational, beating #14 Kokomo 3-2, #18 West Lafayette 4-1, and #24 Lebanon 3-2.  In the past eight days, the Eagles have beaten five Top 25 teams and have improved to 10-1 on the season. DHS remains #10 in the current state rankings.

In dual matches or invitationals this season, DHS has finished ahead of the following Top 25 schools:
Columbus North (currently ranked #6)
Homestead (ranked #7 at time of our match)
Bloomington South (ranked #11 following our match)
Kokomo (ranked #14 at the time of our match)
FW South Side (ranked #15 at time of our match)
West Lafayette (currently ranked #15)
Brownsburg (ranked #18 at time of our match)
Evansville Memorial (ranked as high as #19)
Zionsville (ranked as high as #20)
Lebanon (ranked #24 at the time of our match)

Junior Zach Ervin won all three rounds Saturday in straight sets to improve to 13-1 this fall.

Senior Josh Chambers also went 3-0 Saturday without losing a set at #2 singles.  Josh is 12-2 this season and has 44 career wins.  He is on track to become the 20th player in DHS boys' tennis history to reach 50 career wins.

Junior
Dan Klingenberg, 2-1 on Saturday and 13-1 for the season, has 49 career victories and soon will become the 19th member of the 50 Win Club.  Dan and junior Jeff Price continued their excellent season at #1 doubles with some solid play on Saturday, including a 6-2, 6-2 victory over West Lafayette's Joby Bacher and Brian Kane.  Bacher finished state runner-up in doubles last season.

Senior
Rafael Garcia came through in the clutch with third-set super-breaker victories over Kokomo and West Lafayette at #3 singles.

Eagles defeat #7 Homestead  . . .

Delta won twice and lost once Saturday in the powerful Homestead Invitational, which featured four of Indiana's top 15 teams.  The 9th-ranked Eagles beat 7th-ranked Homestead 3-2 in a great match which saw three of the five individual positions settled in third-set tiebreakers.  Jeff Price and Dan Klingenberg prevailed in a third-set tiebreaker at #1 doubles, then Zac Bow and Joseph Taylor withstood 11 match points at #2 doubles before gaining a 6-7, 7-6, 11-9 victory in the final match on the court. The Eagles also beat #15 Fort Wayne South Side by a 5-0 shutout, with the highlight being Zach Ervin's three-set victory over Derek Carpenter, the third-place finisher in the 2005 State Singles Finals.  The Eagles lost 2-3 to 12th-ranked Lawrence Central, which won the invitational with a perfect 3-0 record.

C-Vic's playing career vs. DHS Tennis  . . .

Assistant coach Craig Vickery competed against DHS Tennis seven times while a member of Winchester Community High School's team from 1993 through 1996.  After a discussion at practice Monday, we decided to do a little research and find out how those matches came out (all in good fun, of course!)  The sad result for C-Vic was a 1-6 record against the Eagles. Here's the rundown:

Date Position Opponent Result
Aug. 24, 1993 (freshman year) #2 doubles Jeremiah Cooper/Clayton Westerfeld L 2-6, 4-6
Oct. 2, 1993 (freshman year - sectional) #2 doubles Nathan Jackson/Jeremiah Cooper L 3-6, 6-3, 6-7
Aug. 23, 1994 (sophomore year) #2 doubles Matt Kolb/Alex Nahvi L 3-6, 1-6
Oct. 1, 1994 (sophomore year - sectional) #1 doubles Clayton Westerfeld/Jeremiah Cooper L 1-6, 1-6
Aug. 22, 1995 (junior year) #3 singles Aaron Parris W 7-5, 7-5
junior year -sectional   our teams did not meet
Aug. 27, 1996 (senior year) #2 singles Arnd Viehofer L 4-6, 3-6
Oct. 5, 1996 (senior year - sectional) #2 singles Arnd Viehofer L 3-6, 2-6

Craig went on to play tennis at Greenville College in Illinois. Here's a little-known fact about Craig:  While at Greenville College, he also competed on the volleyball and golf teams!  In fact, one year he had to choose between playing in the conference tennis meet or the conference golf meet - the events were on the same day.  He chose tennis, of course!

Congratulations after an outstanding weekend  . . .

The DHS Tennis family of players, managers, coaches and parents-- 60 members strong -- enjoyed a great weekend at the Jeffersonville Invitational.  The varsity again came through with a championship in the 8-team tourney, which featured five teams ranked in the state Top 25 at the end of last season.  Delta players won 12 of their 15 individual matches against some excellent competition.  Zach Ervin, Josh Chambers, Dan Klingenberg and Jeff Price were flight champions, and Joseph Taylor finished as flight runner-up.  Delta especially stepped it up with some clutch play in the championship round, as Ervin, Chambers, Price and Klingenberg combined to win 36 games and lose only 12 in the final match of the day. As an added bonus, the Bloomington South head coach and the Jeffersonville head coach each complimented our players for their on-court attitudes even during pressure matches.  There is still room for improvement in this area, but it is true that we have grown a lot in the last 2-3 weeks. Our overall behavior at the hotel and restaurant also were good.

The JV team placed fourth, but everyone got to play at least two matches and gained experience.

The team enjoyed dinner at Buckhead's on the Ohio River.

Thanks to all who contributed to the fun and productive weekend!

Delaware County Champions  . . .

Congratulations to junior Zach Ervin and senior Hayley Hall for earning championships in the Men's A Singles and Women's A Singles divisions of the annual 2006 Delaware County Tennis Open.  The tournament, which ended Sunday night, attracted a high total of 240 players.  Ervin was dominant in singles; the closest anyone came to him was senior Josh Chambers, who lost 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Ervin beat Yorktown coach and ex-Ball State player Neil Behrman 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals and 2003 DHS grad and current Valparaiso University player Blain Keller 6-0, 6-4 in the finals.  Hall was equally dominant in Women's A Singles, where she beat Anderson's Cara Huck 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match and topped Winchester grad and current Erskine College player Jenna Tudor 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals.  Hall also teamed with Tudor to win Women's A Doubles, beating 2006 grad Katie Bryan and Lauren Wilson in the finals.

Bike ride is successful . . .

Seventeen members of the DHS Tennis family participated in a conditioning bike ride Thursday morning on the Cardinal Greenways trail.  The group biked 15-20 miles.  Those on the ride were Bobby Helfst, Dan Klingenberg, Jeff Price, Kory Mace, Josh Chambers, Zac Bow, Zach Ervin, Alex "Crash" Wagner, Neal Faulkner, John Rauchenstein, Jared Bullock, Ben Bryan, Jordan Chambers, Kristin Crider, Kelly Crider, Ashley Philhower and Tim Cleland.

Surgery Successful for Carl  . . .

Carl's surgery for his broken left femur went well Monday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.  Sunday evening, he broke the bone in the same spot as the April injury.  Doctors inserted a stronger steel rod into the leg and have given him a positive prognosis for a full recovery over the long term.  He is  now home from Methodist. Carl is disappointed in this setback but knows he has the support of lots of friends who will help him again to get through this tough time. "A sorrow shared is a sorrow halved."

Scholarship Fund Opportunities  . . .

At the Penguin, there were several opportunities to contribute to the Aly (Ferguson) McCann Memorial Scholarship fund.  Aly Ferguson, a standout DHS Tennis player who twice competed in the Final Four of the State Doubles tournament, died one year ago in a car crash in Indianapolis. She was an innocent victim when her car was struck by a driver who was fleeing from the police.

All proceeds from T-shirt sales, a raffle for a Prince O3 White tennis racket, and other sales items went to the scholarship fund. We should be able to donate about $400 to the scholarship fund this summer.  Thanks to all who helped!

State Singles and Doubles Finals  . . .

HAYLEY HALL     2006 State Singles Runner-Up!

Hayley Hall finished State Singles Runner-up on Saturday, becoming the first DHS Tennis player ever to reach the championship match in singles in girls' tennis or boys' tennis!  Hayley's final record is 26-1, which is a record for most victories in one season in girls' tennis.  Hayley now has 65 career wins, which ties her with Kristin Crider.  Both girls are juniors and trail all-time victory leader Sarah (Peckinpaugh) Clark by 13 wins.

Hayley defeated previously unbeaten Romina Clemente of Culver Academies 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals at Indianapolis Racquet Club on Dean Road.  In the championship match, Clarksville junior Tiffany Welcher proved to be too strong in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Hayley. We all extend our congratulations to Hayley!

Katie Bryan
and Kristin Crider ran into a team on a mission Friday and lost 6-0, 6-0 to Center Grove's Melanie Sullivan and Becca Porter in the State Doubles quarterfinals.  Sullivan has been state runner-up in 2004 and 2005 in doubles, and Friday she played like someone determined to win the championship this year.  It was an unfortunate end of the season for Katie and Kristin, who entered with an undefeated record but never got untracked in this match.  Regardless of the final match result, congratulations to Katie and Kristin for a wonderful season!

Center Grove went on to win the State Doubles Championship on Saturday.
