Coach Tim Cleland chosen for Indiana Tennis Hall of Fame  . . .

DHS boys and girls tennis coach Tim Cleland has received the highest award available in Indiana high school tennis with his recent induction into the Indiana HS Tennis Hall of Fame.

The (Muncie) Star Press wrote an article which is accessible here.

The 17th annual induction ceremony was Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 at the Barbara S. Wynne Tennis Center in Indianapolis.  A reception was planned for 6:30 p.m., and the induction dinner and ceremony followed at 7 p.m.  The ceremony is available through webcast at www.hoosierauthority.com

There are now 90 members of the Indiana Tennis Hall of Fame.  Those members include prominent players, past and current coaches, and others who have played major roles in the development of Indiana high school tennis.

At age 44, Coach Cleland is one of the youngest coaches ever to be inducted.  With 578 career wins, he ranks #8 on the all-time victory list among Indiana high school tennis coaches. Thirteen of the top 14 coaches on that list are members of the Hall of Fame.

Coach Cleland is the second Delaware County resident to be inducted.  Muncie YMCA tennis pro Steve Behrman, a two-time IHSAA state doubles champion and one of Indiana's top teaching pros, was inducted in 2004.

Delta is one of only 20 schools statewide to participate in both the IHSAA Boys State Finals (2004) and the IHSAA Girls State Finals (2000).  Fewer than 10 people have coached a team in both the boys and girls IHSAA state tennis finals.

The Eagles' current streak of 13 straight Boys Tennis Regional titles is the second-longest streak in Indiana and is the longest streak in Delaware County history for any sport.

The Eagles have reached the Team or Individual Singles/Doubles State Finals in 16 of Coach Cleland's 31 seasons.  On five occasions, DHS players have finished as either State Singles or State Doubles Runners-Up, including the 2007 doubles runner-up team of Dan Klingenberg and Jeff Price and the 2006 singles runner-up Hayley Hall.

In addition to his success at Delta HS, Coach Cleland also has been an active leader in the Indiana HS Tennis Coaches Association.  He has served as president of that organization for nine years.  In that role, he has helped organize the annual State Tennis Convention, has helped formulate new rules for high school tennis, has chaired numerous district and state coaches' meetings, and has chaired Rules Interpretation Meetings for the IHSAA.

More players honored in Building Foundations program . . .

Sophomores Tate Dishman, Youngwoo Han and Alex Zimmerman and freshman Ethan Grove are the latest DHS Boys' Tennis players to earn a T-shirt in athletic director Mr. Stan Daugherty's "Building Foundations" program, which puts an emphasis on character development for Delta HS athletes.  The six character traits that are emphasized in the program are Respect, Responsibility, Perseverance, Commitment, Integrity and Self-Control.

As part of the program, Delta athletes can earn a Delta Athletics "Building Foundations" T-shirt for displaying some of the character traits on or off the playing fields.  Head coaches in each sport are responsible for identifying deserving athletes on their teams.

Prior to practice on Monday, Sept. 29, Tate, Young, Alex and Ethan were honored.

Tate and Ethan were chosen for "Perseverance."   They have played No. 1 doubles for most of the season.  As a sophomore and freshman in their first season of varsity competition, they have often faced older and stronger competition.  As a result, victories have been hard to come by.  However, the guys have continued night after night to stay late and work on their games.  Their results have been getting better and better. Congratulations to Tate and Ethan for never giving up!

Young was selected for "Respect."  Young always respectfully listens to his coaches for advice and is polite to all.  He works hard to become the best he can be in tennis and in everything he does.  Congratulations to Young!

Alex was selected for "Responsibility."  With his father away from home on a National Guard assignment, Alex has increased responsibilities around his house with his mother and younger brother.  Alex has had a good season splitting time between singles and doubles.  Congratulations to Alex!

Each week, another tennis player will be honored.

Just three months ago, ex-DHS Tennis star J.D. Greenlee beat Chris Herron, the 2007 IHSAA State Singles Champion.

Not bad for a couple of boys from Gaston and Dunkirk who started playing tennis in middle school!

> Grandma Peggy Brown is now at the Muncie Health Care Rehabilitation Center on North Walnut Street in Room 207.  She expects to be there for perhaps a month as she regains her strength.  She was extremely excited to learn that DHS had prevailed in the sectional championship over Burris!  After several weeks of hospital stays, Grandma Peggy sends the following message to all: "Thank you to everyone for all the visits, the cards, the flowers, the prayers, and the stuffed animals. Love ya all bunches!"

> Ex-DHS Tennis player Lindsey Loffer recently announced her engagement.  She plans to be married next June to her boyfriend Scott, whom she met at the University of Indianapolis.  Congratulations, Lindsey!

> DHS sophomore Ben Bryan, 19-5 at No. 1 singles this year, now has 41 career varsity victories.  He is just three away from tying his older brother, Patrick, the 2002 IHSAA State Doubles third-place finisher.  Ben is on track to become one of the top four all-time victory leaders in DHS Tennis history.  Zach Ervin holds the record at 101, followed by Dan Klingenberg and Kelly Robbins, each at 91.  Andy Rector is fourth at 76.

Bond and Brock teamed to win the doubles title.  They beat sophomores Tad Dorton and Youngwoo Han in the final match, 8-4.

Congratulations on the pair of victories, Bondo!

J.D. Greenlee accepted to IU Optometry School  . . .

Ex-DHS Tennis star J.D. Greenlee, a senior at the University of Indianapolis, was notified Thursday, Oct. 2 that he has been accepted to the Indiana University School of Optometry.  This was his first choice and is the result of several years of hard work!  Congratulations, J.D.!

Dan, a freshman at IUPUI, lost his opening singles match, then beat a player from Cleveland State University in a third-set tiebreaker.  Dan and his partner, freshman Bren Vasalakis of Yorktown, dropped a close 9-7 decision in doubles to one of Butler's top teams.

Good advice given at Senior Talks  . . .

Continuing a long DHS Boys' Tennis tradition, the team's three seniors spoke to the 21 underclassmen on Wednesday night at the end of practice.  Jared Bullock, John Rauchenstein and Caleb Austin did a great job sharing words of wisdom.

Among the messages from the seniors:
   > DHS Tennis stands out because of the emphasis on character development as well as tennis skills.  Be more concerned with your character (which is who you really are) than your reputation (which is what other people think about you).  If you have strong character, your reputation will be good, too, among people who truly know you.

   > Your teammates are family.  Take care of each other, support each other, and help each other make good choices.  Pick your teammates up when they make mistakes.

   > Enjoy every day because the four years of high school fly by quickly.  Before you know it, you will be the one giving the Senior Talk!

   > Pursue your passions with enthusiasm.  When you love doing something, you are on your way to success.

   > Congratulations on the amazing amount of improvement this team has made from the beginning of the season to the current time.

 Delta Invitational is a big success  . . .

Perfect weather and strong competition paved the way for a wonderful Delta Invitational varsity tournament on Saturday, Sept. 27.

DHS finished third in the strong 8-team field.  Fort Wayne Canterbury, ranked 19th, won the championship with a 4-1 victory over Lake Central in the final match.

Delta beat 25th-ranked Richmond 3-2 for third place.  Richmond has a 15-2 record and is the North Central Conference champion.  Prior to Saturday, its powerful singles lineup of Josh Hollingsworth, Jimmy Fetzer and Mike Boyer -- all seniors -- had not been swept in a match all season.  But Delta accomplished the sweep behind the strong play of sophomores Ben Bryan and Jordan Chambers and senior Caleb Austin.

It was the first victory over a state-ranked team this season for Delta, which finishes the regular season with a 12-7 record.

Special thanks to the following people and businesses for their support of the Delta Invitational:

Catching up on the news and notes for DHS Tennis . . .

Here's a random collection of what's going on in the world of DHS Tennis:
   > Manager Kristen Smith continues to rehabilitate from her recent knee surgery to fix her torn ACL.  Kristen is expected back at school this week.  With proper rehab, she should be back playing competitively again by the spring season.  Good luck, Kristen!

   > The sectional draw was made Monday during the day.  Delta and Alexandria will meet on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. for the semifinals on Courts 1-2-3.  Yorktown and Muncie Burris play at the same time on Courts 4-5-6-7.

The championship match will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. due to SAT testing that morning.

   > The junior varsity team finished its regular season with a 10-3 record, which is better than the team's record last season.  Winning at least 10 individual matches for the JV this season were sophomore Zach Richardson (15), sophomore Brock Windsor (14), sophomore Josh Hapner (15), freshman Bond St. John (14), sophomore Alex Zimmerman(13), sophomore Tad Dorton (12), and freshman Matt Fisher (11).  In addition, junior Aaron Williams, sophomore Youngwoo Han and freshman Ethan Grove have won 10 or more matches combined between varsity and JV results. And considering that three of the top varsity players are sophomores (Ben Bryan, Jordan Chambers and Tate Dishman) the future of DHS Tennis is very bright!

   > Beginning Monday, the JV players will compete in an intrasquad doubles and singles tournament at practice.  Matches will be 8-game pro sets.  Let Coach Cleland know if you will NOT be attending.

   > The annual Senior Talk tradition will be Wednesday during practice.  Seniors Caleb Austin, Jared Bullock and John Rauchenstein will speak with all teammates.  Attendance is required unless you have permission from Coach Cleland to miss.

   > DHS Tennis super-fan Peggy Brown, grandmother of Jordan and Josh Chambers, remains in Ball Memorial Hospital.  She has had several visitors this past week and has made excellent progress as she continues her courageous struggle to regain her health.  Please continue to keep Grandma Brown in your thoughts and prayers!  No matter how badly she feels, the mention of "DHS Tennis" always brings a special sparkle to her eyes!  Thanks to all who have made a special trip to visit her.  Love ya bunches, Grandma!

Greenlee plays tennis with famous musicians . . .

DHS Tennis graduate J.D. Greenlee got an unusual opportunity last week to play tennis with some famous musicians.  Greenlee is a senior at the University of Indianapolis.  Two bands, Counting Crows and Maroon Five, were in town to play a concert at Verizon Wireless Music Center.

The drummer for Counting Crows is a strong tennis player.  He contacted the University of Indianapolis tennis coach to inquire about finding a practice partner, and the coach matched him up with Greenlee.  The tennis group also included a drummer and guitarist for Maroon Five.

After the tennis session, the musicians gave Greenlee a ticket to the show and a backstage pass.

In other DHS Tennis news:

Klingenberg reaches doubles semifinals at college tournament  . . .

Dan Klingenberg and his future teammate at IUPUI, Taylor Tunis of Whiteland, won three rounds and reached the doubles semifinals in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association college summer tournament at Indiana University.  They lost in the semifinals 8-2 to recent IU graduate and standout player Dara McLoughlin and current University of California star Kalim Stewart.  One of the victories for Klingenberg and Tunis was over IU's J.J. Bolock and University of Chicago's Alex Winney (former Yorktown HS star).

Stewart grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, before moving as a teen to California to attend a tennis academy.  He ended up being ranked No. 1 in the United States in Boys' 18 Singles in 2005.

Muncie's Jon Wegener played Stewart in the second round of the singles draw and lost 6-4, 6-2.  This was an outstanding result.  Stewart is the No. 1 seed and has lots very few games in his other matches so far.

J.D. Greenlee lost his opening singles match to a player from Brigham Young University, then won his first consolation match before losing his next consolation match to an IU player.

Muncie's Jon Wegener and Yorktown's Bren Vasalakis also won their opening singles matches and won a doubles match together.  Klingenberg and Ervin won a doubles match together, too.

Ex-DHS Tennis star Andy Rector hangs out with the stars . . .

Rector now is working for AT&T business markets group in Atlanta.  Previously, he worked for Boyd Tinsley, a musician with the Dave Matthews Band.  While working for Tinsley -- a huge tennis fan -- Rector had many tennis opportunities.  Among other memories, he traveled to Wimbledon with Tinsley to watch Roddick play, and at the US Open, he sat with Venus Williams at a cookout to celebrate Roddick's birthday.  Rector also attended more than 40 Dave Matthews Band concerts this past summer.

Eagles battle through tough, cold conditions . . .

Everything fell into place for a great Eagle Round Robin tournament Saturday, except one thing: Mother Nature did not cooperate.  Four state-ranked teams gathered in Muncie, but the morning started with rain and temperatures in the low 40s.  After several delays, the teams found some dry courts at Muncie Central HS and play began, but by that time the temperature had dipped to about 40 and stiff winds made it feel even colder.

Eventually, all that could be played was one team match apiece.  Sixth-ranked Fort Wayne Canterbury beat 15th-ranked Delta 4-1, and 27th-ranked Terre Haute North defeated 21st-ranked West Lafayette 3-1 (the #2 doubles match did not finish).

All teams appreciated the efforts of the DHS Parent Boosters, who provided burgers, hot dogs, brats, fruit, veggies, desserts, and hot chocolate.  Special thanks also to Don Wafer for helping with the transition to the Muncie Central site.

Kristin McKinney remains sidelined with pneumonia.  Kelly Crider won the first set at #1 singles but lost in a third-set tiebreaker to a strong opponent.  Ashley Philhower and Emily Marsh dominated their match at #2 doubles.  Devyn Wafer and Taylor Cardini hung tough in the first set at #1 doubles but lost 7-5, 6-0.  Laura Hapner and Morgan Hahn got better as the matches went on at #2 and #3 singles, but neither could claim a set.

DHS has four matches scheduled in a six-day span next week.  If Mother Nature cooperates, it should be a good week to show improvement.

DHS ranked No. 15 in first poll of spring season . . .

For the 10th consecutive year, DHS girls' tennis is ranked in the State Top 20 rankings.  The Eagles are at No. 15 in the opening poll of the year, which was released Monday night, April 7.  The Eagles are off to a 2-0 start, but the competition will get much more difficult this Saturday.  That's when DHS hosts the Eagle Round Robin, playing No. 6 Fort Wayne Canterbury at 9:00 a.m., No. 27 Terre Haute North at 11:30 a.m., and No. 21 West Lafayette at 2:00 p.m.  All matches are at Delta.  Come out and watch some great tennis this weekend!
